“Super - we'd go again!”

Stayed 4 nights in sub-zero cold and snow, but we were so warm in our room and in the lounge with its open fire and very welcome tea and cake after our icy expeditions! The young staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Our double room was spacious and clean and great. Excellent breakfasts, and you can get good soup and cheese/antipasti plates till late. A smoking lounge was a welcome bonus! Within walking distance of all the main attractions in central Vienna, though we made good use of buses, trams, underground (using our Vienna cards, which you can get from the hotel, and which gives reductions at museums, galleries and lots else) because of the snow! Some excellent authentically Viennese restaurants close by - Boheme, Zu Ebener Erd und Ersten Stock - and elsewhere in City. No hesitation in recommending it, much nicer than a large, impersonal hotel.

Great hotel, location and staff. Room was huge, art is amazing, and breakfast superb. Needs a bar with a good cosmo! ;))

A great experience. Excellent service. Great friendly people. Lovely rooms. We had a rooftop balcony from which we could watch the New Year's fireworks. Lovely touches at breakfast and tea time. I can not say enough good things about this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a rooftop balcony.

“Your home in Vienna”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We were guests of the Aldstadt over the New Year period recently, and truly feel that this particular hotel surpassed the others on our trip to Europe. Whilst the hotel had a couple of things that were a little different to deal with - the doors are very heavy; the upstairs corridor doors have a architrave on the floor; they didn't have family or interconnected rooms; there were 2 single doonas on a double bed - these differences were dealt with easily after a time. The thing that really sets the Aldstadt apart is its staff, who really treated us more like family than guests. We found the reception staff very helpful - they gave very detailed information regarding local public transport and sites to visit. The hotel motto "your residence in Vienna" rang true for us on New Years' Day morning, with the breakfast buffet extended to 1pm and lovely breakfast food treats available for the duration. We found ourselves sitting in the breakfast lounge to well after 1pm, watching the New Years Day Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on its large wide-screen TV (3 of 4 of the breakfast rooms have these TVs) whilst enjoying our coffees, the ambiance and the performance! This hotel has none of the slickness of other hotel chains, but really excels in so many ways. If you can stay here, do, for the charming experience alone!

Room Tip: We were a few floors up and we were facing the road; we didn't have any noise issues. Don't...

“Felt guilty that I wanted to spend more time in this hotel than seeing Vienna”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

This hotel is 100% entitled to it's well deserved TA ranking. Wow - best place we have stayed in quite some time and my favourite from all the hotels I have visited in Europe.

We found it brilliantly located - in an area filled with little restaurants, bars and galleries, a short walk from the historical innerstadt and while we didn't have the chance to go there - also a hop skip and a jump from Vienna's shopping mile. U-Bahn stations are also nearby and are such a convenient way to explore Vienna.

Upon arrival the reception feels very unassuming but I believe this is intentional - it makes it feel less of a hotel and more of a home. The owner lives there himself and declared in the bar menu that his approach to this hotel is to make it a place he himself would enjoy spending time in, where his guests feel welcome and his staff are treated well. His staff- a young, enthusiastic and gregarious lot reflect these values perfectly. No request was too hard - one day we were looking for tickets to the State Opera which was sadly booked out according to the website. The lovely receptionist called the box office and not only tracked us down two tickets but had them collected for us as well! Another night we decided to dine in our room and they helped recommend to us local restaurants that could deliver and helped us make our order!

Our room (a junior suite) was all white - from the coffee machine, to the TV to the gauze curtained bed and the leather chaise lounge. It was huge, high ceilinged and felt like our own Viennese apartment (just the way the owner had intended I would imagine). A bottle of proseco awaited us as a honeymoon surprise and the bathroom amenities include l'occitane (my favourite!). The bed was firm and the best we've slept in so far on this trip to Europe although the pillows could be improved (too soft).

The shared living space was a number of salons with tables and lounges and filled with the art that I believe the owner curates himself. The main salon has a welcoming open fire and a bar with complimentary tea and cakes every afternoon. We could have spent our whole stay here if we hadn't so many sights to see. The staff go out of their way to please and ensure total comfort.

The tasty all-inclusive breakfast buffet is served in the same area and comes with all the Austrian trappings as well as eggs done as you like. I especially enjoyed spotting the proseco available along side the juices - not something I've seen before?

Some only minor negatives - while everything was very clean, I did find our bathroom toilet was an exception and had an unusual odor. Amenities weren't replaced daily which was ok but after our third night were very nearly out of them all. The free wifi is great and welcomed but it is so frustrating to have to login each time you want to use it on a device particularly when there is a different code, etc for each device. I learnt that I needed to carry around the user names and passwords so I could sign in when needed. The hotel rooms are non-smoking but unfortunately one of the salons allows it and even though it's closed off - the smell does infiltrate the other public areas including my clothes.

Those minor inconveniences aside I would recommend this as THE hotel to stay in Vienna and we cannot wait to return. Others have a lot to live up to after this.
