“Student dorm”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2007

I went to Hotel Atlas to attend a conference, and picked this place to save some money.

This "hotel" looks like a student dorm (which I suspect it is). It is worn, with dirty floor carpets and walls (however no insects). The room was hot, and the bed was not good and very narrow. Also, the breakfast was boring, with a poor selection and long queues. The room actually had a TV, even if it was very, very tiny!

I did not have high expectations, but i was actually quite disappointed. However, they provide you with a decent and cheap broad band connection, and the receptionists were OK.

If price is the only thing that matter, feel free. Otherwise, i would spend a little bit extra to have a proper motel/hotel.

“Not the Best”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2007

Good location, decent breakfast, helpful staff, and was decently priced. However, it was quite hot, and there was no fan in the room. It was a bit uncomfortable. The bed was quite small, and very hard. I usually am content with the basics, but in this case I would not go back to this hotel and choose a better place.

“Atlas is not that bad!”

I read the only review of Atlas in TripAdvisor and was scared of making a reservation there, but it was the only affordable central hotel in Vienna with free rooms during the days I had to spend in town, so..... I booked.
Surprises: description is mostly correct, it is a sort of monolithic concrete block, with no soft carpets in the corridors and so on, but it is so cleaned that you could eat on the floor, and no strange smells around. The only light was impossible to turn on was the one at the room entrance (by the way the rooms are larger than average), but I did not care. Breakfast is less than average, but you are paying 60 Euro and you are right close to the center (10 minutes walk) and in front of the most interesting Museums... try this price in Rome! Personnel is really kind and cooperative and the only screams I had the occasion to hear came from a bunch of girls that stayed in a room in front of mine (they were not at the hotel), but it was 02:00 p.m., had just returned from a evening at a local heurigen and so I had the best of sleeps anyway!

“The worst hotel I have ever stayed in.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2005

This was sold to me by bookings as a 3 star hotel. This is some mistake, surely? The place is essentially a university hall of residence with furniture, fixtures, fittings and (lack of) refinement to match. The breakfasts were dull and unimaginative, the shower smelt eggy, the bathroom light kept turning itself off when I was in the shower, ("they all do that".)

There are no soft furnishings (carpets, wallpaper etc) in the communal corridors or staircases which means that any noise in these areas echoes throughout the whole hotel. Add to this that the hotel mostly caters to drunk screaming groups of school/college kids and that they have NO security guards and you have a recipe for no sleep at all. I had to encourage the poor guy at the desk to call the police at 4am as neither he nor the teachers could stop the kids running riot. The kids finally shut up after the police arrived at 5am. UNBELIEVABLY these 'guests' were allowed to stay on at the hotel, so I had similar problems sleeping the next night. I asked to be moved to a room away from the screaming college kids but I was told that they were everywhere in the hotel so it would not make any difference. The guy in the room next door asked the kids from Croatia opposite to be quiet at about 3am only to have a bunch of them outside his room chanting "---"

It was like being in hell, and not what you need if you have to concentrate or even stay awake during the day.

In its favour, the desk staff were polite and courteous but it seemed there was very little they could do. It also has a good location near the museums quarter.

If you are a teenager who has no idea about how to behave then this is the place for you, otherwise I seriously recommend staying somewhere else, even if its farther out. (Vienna has very good public transport.)
