Vienna does not exactly have the cheapest hotels in Europe so price and location are important. When I saw this hotel I thought it was a cheap 4 star, having stayed there I would now say that it is a reasonably priced 2-3 star (at best) It may well have been a 4 star in 1978 but it is not by today's standards. This judgement is based on the superficial: decoration, amenities, quality of bathroom design, bedroom furnishings etc.
Service was very good, cleanliness very good also, it's just that the main structure is a bit tired! I had a single room on the top floor that had a single bed and slanting roof, very simple but clean and adequate. Free wifi, which should be standard in my opinion in all hotels with star rating, even if they increased the cost by 50c a night to cover it...
The best thing was brekfast: good choice of cereals, bread, fruit, yoghurt, fresh pastries, meats etc. Good flask of coffee and hot milk, enough for about 5 cups! The breakfast room is probably the best bit of the hotel, if the rest was like that.... what is it about hotel buffet breakfasts that makes people (me included) eat too much? At home I eat cereal, fruit and tea with lemon, in hotels my table is piled high with mini cakes, streudl, meats, cheese, salame, yes salame, even here in Italy no one eats salame for breakfast!! and then there are the endless rounds of toast with every jam possible and at least 4 cups of coffee that it takes me 3 hours to work off!
Anyway, to return to the review: the mini market for snacks etc, although a good idea is a bit like a frugal supermarket, the kind I went into with my Grandma 30 years ago...oh dear...finally, it'sa 10 minute walk to the metro not 5, but that is fine, and the surrounding area has some nice restaurants... check out D' Landsknecht on the corner of Porzellangasse and Thurngasse, great roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut for 9 euros, traditional local pub type place...menu in English too.
