“Historical hotel with great service, but in need of a make-over”

I recently stayed at the Radisson Blu Palais Hotel in Vienna for one night on a business trip. The first thing I would like to comment on is the service: this was outstanding from start to finish. I arrived at around 9:30 a.m., way ahead of the usual check-in time, but was given a room immediately. For the next day I requested a late check-out as my flight from Vienna was not leaving until the evening and I was able to stay in my room until 6 p.m. - this was by far the latest late check-out I was ever given! Room service was also very quick. I asked for an iron and ironing board and they were delivered to my room promptly (although the ironing board wasn't in very good shape). Furthermore I ordered food from the room service menu at around 2:30 in the morning and again my order was delivered within 20 minutes or so.

The room itself was nice enough but had clearly seen better days (with the exception of the bathroom which apparently had been redone already and was very nice indeed). But the carpet in the room had quite a few stains and was worn completely thin in front of the bathroom door.

Other things worth mentioning: free minibar and free wifi!

Location: Walking distance to the main shopping street and the Hotel Sacher for a piece of delicious Sacher cake!

All in all I would recommend this hotel for the quality of its service, but would probably not return there if I got to choose the hotel myself as the room was really a bit worn.

“Old style hotel in a good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Visiting for a conference, I stayed at this hotel. The location is good, the city center is around the corner, tramway and metro close by. It is a typical old style hotel around a - now covered - courtyard. The conference floors are a bit of a maze by consequence. Not simple to find your way around. Decoration is old style, frankly not what I was expecting from the Radisson chain. Everything was clean and the room was large (actually had a two floor maisonette, which was new to me). Nespresso machine in the room, well working free wifi in the room, allowing multiple devices to be active at the same time and no need to log on again every day. Why do hotels believe that heating bedrooms to more than 22 degrees and then needing the noisy airco at night toget the temperature down is what guests want? If you look superficially, it seems well maintained, but if you look closer, you notice small things that are not being taken care of in a manner you would expect in this class. Staff was ok, no complaints, but not overly service oriented or very friendly either. An OK hotel, just that.

Room Tip: Ask for a maisonette if you have the choice.

“Solid business hotel: good location!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

We chose this hotel because of its location and then found a very good deal so decided to try it. I must say that the staff was very helpful both at reception and at the Royal Club breakfast room. The buffet and order-made items were very good. But the lay out of the hotel is confusing and to find the Royal Club breakfast room one needs a compass and map! Also the junior suite which we had was clean but 'looked dated and tired!' But given the price we got for the weekend in mid January and the good location, we were satisfied with our stay. With that said, I would not recommended for a romantic weekend!

“Good location, standard hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I was at Radisson Blu Palais for a conference. That was comfortable and average. I haven't had any specific bad experience but it is one of those places where you think they don't go the extra mile. The room was a bit outdated but that was not a problem. The only thing that really disturbed me was the smoke in the conference area. People were allowed to smoke in a specific place but the area was so close to the main conference and completely open, that you could smell the smoke everywhere. I have nothing against a smoking area, but it has to be closed and properly ventilated.

“Average hotel- but not your average Radisson”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

We made a last minute trip to Vienna ... It happened to be the weekend the markets opened for Christmas, so many hotels were booked, so we were glad to get a room... But it wasn't the nicest Radisson we've stayed in- I actually was surprised that the room was so dated... But we enjoyed the free minibar which was great for water and even champagne at night and free Internet. We didn't eat there -but the front desk service was helpful with directions and tips. Just one night- so the location was superb.
