The Astoria Kitzbuehel was the last hotel of the four we stayed in on our Austrian tour, and it was definately the best. As soon as we entered Reception and received a warm, friendly welcome from the Receptionist, and took in the atmosphere of the large, airy and spotlessly clean lounge, we both knew we were going to like this hotel.
Our first impressions were confirmed when we entered our room in the new building. It was light, airy, spacious and had a large balcony overlooking the river. There was a very large wardrobe, but no drawers and nowhere else to hang coats etc., but that was a small inconvenience. The bathroom had a walk in shower, which was good, and bathrobes and slippers were provided. The room was spotlessly clean, and the only noise we could hear was the flow of the river.
Meals at the Astoria were lovely. There was a large choice at breakfast, which was buffet with selections of cereal, meats, cheese, fruits etc. The omelettes were very good. Evening meals were good quality and were presented well. The only downside was a few annoying flies whilst you were eating.
The location of the hotel is close to the railway station, but we did not hear any noise from that. We were also told that it was about a 15 minutes walk into the town, but it wasn't anything like as long as that, and there is a path from the back of the hotel which runs alongside the river and straight into town. This is a very pleasant walk. Unfortunately, on our second day, there was some work being done to the path and to some buildings nearby, and the path was closed off halfway along, which meant you had to walk on the main road which was not great.
The hotel spa is lovely. Yes it is a nude zone, but to be honest it is a case of "when in Rome". You would be more noticeable and have people stare at you more if you wore swimming gear - as it was, nobody takes any notice and we were not put off, nor did we feel uncomfortable in that environment. The facilities in the spa are excellent, the steam room is definately steamy and the saunas are really relaxing. It is a pity there isn't a pool or a jacuzzi, but the area is a pleasant place to relax and water, fruit drinks or tea is provided. I booked a massage which was excellent.
Kitzbuehel is a picturesque town. Plenty to see and do. We took the cable cars to the three quarter stage of the Kitzbueheller Horn and walked up the rest of the way. It was hard going, it is pretty steep and the air is thin at nearly 2000 metres up, but the views from the top are worth it. We had a very well earned beer at the restaurant near the top. There is also a Alpine flower garden part of the way up which attracted a lot of attention, but I suspect most of the people used the flowers as an excuse to stop and take a "breather."
There are some good walks around the area too. We walked out to the small lake and after spending half an hour on it in an electric boat, we walked around it, and this was very nice with a woodland section, the meadows and the Alps around you - quite stunning.
The most noticeable thing about the Astoria is the staff. Nothing seems to be too much trouble, and everyone we came across was polite, friendly and helpful. The way most of them instantly swapped from German to English, Spanish, French etc when required to do so for the different nationalities of the guests, was commendable. We had a relaxing, peaceful stay here, just what we needed at the end of our tour.
Our flight home was scheduled for 8.30pm and we were not due to be transported from the hotel until 5.15pm. The hotel rooms had to be vacated by 11am so we knew it was likely to be a day of just hanging around with luggage, waiting to go home! We asked if we could extend the room on the day of departure, expecting to pay for a couple of hours, but we were surprised and delighted when we were told we could have the room until 5pm at no extra cost. This was great, because it really extended our stay for a day. We were able to have a leisurely breakfast, go into town and have a meal there and return to the hotel late afternoon to finish packing and shower before leaving. It was very much appreciated. We have travelled quite a bit and stayed in numerous hotels and the staff here really did stand out for providing an excellent service. The title of this review says we enjoyed it more than the Waldorf Astoria in New York, and it is true. The famous Waldorf Astoria is overrated and living on its past reputation - this Astoria is really working hard to provide value for money, great service and a memorable stay. We will definately stay here again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends and colleagues.
