We stayed at Hotel Weisses Kreuz in May 2007 during our honeymoon. The hotel's description of its location under the fortress is not an exaggeration--you can't get much closer! The location is up a small hill just off Residenzplatz, and very close to the fortress lift. There is a biergarten just a few steps away, and the hotel is built above a restaurant serving Austrian and Croatian cuisine.
The room was clean and comfortable. It was painted in different pastel colors, so it felt like being inside an easter egg--different and fun. Room had opening windows and a small TV. The large mirror against one wall seemed like one-way glass, so we felt like someone was watching us. But, we got over it.
The bathroom was the best part--it was huge! Very modern. It had more than adequate sink/counter space, and a rainfall showerhead. There was no shower curtain, but spray from shower just drains through the floor. There was no window curtain, but the shower seemed out of sight from potential peepers.
Breakfast was a good spread, but get there early--we came down around 9 or 9:30 every morning, and supplies were minimal. It was difficult to find a hotel staff person to tell them we wanted coffee, milk for cereal, bowl, juice glass, etc. Once we did find them, they were very nice and breakfast was tasty. Meats, cheeses, breads, cereal, etc.
While being just below the fortress, the hotel is tucked away from the buzz of the town. But, it's a short walk to the old town commercial areas.
Staff was scarce, and we had minimal interaction with them. If you're looking to chat with the owners, stay in a bed and breakfast. Overall, our stay here was great!
