The best part about this hotel is location. Within 5 minutes walk to the main church (Dom), Christmas markets, ice skating rink and within 10 mins to pretty much everything in the old town. We had booked a room for the whole family of 4 and were allocated room 12 which had 2 single beds pushed together as the main bed for adults and 2 smaller single beds together for our teen girls which appeared to also form a sofa although we never used it that way. The room was very spacious. Shower tended to run a bit irregular – bathroom had a towel warmer so great for washing clothes and getting them dry overnight.
Breakfasts were adequate - European continental with cereal, fruit, yoghurt, cheese, meats, toast, etc. The only hot option was hard boiled eggs. All day tea facilities were fine but nothing flash.
The hotel/room was very well heated and on occasion it was so warm we had to open a window to let in some freezing air to cool things down a bit. No complaints about this as its nice to be warm inside when the weather is below freezing.
The owner/boss of the hotel was an older gentlemen, often at breakfast and was very friendly and always smiling. He came outside and waved us farewell when we left at 6.15am in the freezing cold. He also brought a plate of biscuits to our door on Christmas Eve – nice touch. The daily manager was a younger guy called Norbert who was also helpful but a little shy and conversation was not always free-flowing. Polite but nothing over and above if you know what I mean. The hotel staff are fine to order taxis and check restaurant bookings, etc but not fantastic at providing options on lots of things to do or alternatives if restaurants were closed or booked out. Didn’t seem to have loads of local knowledge. So do your research before you arrive and throw your own suggestions at them rather than expect them to be provided.
The hotel staff didn’t actually recommend it but we tried the Austrian restaurant just 2 doors down called Zwettlers Stiftskeller. It was great. Beef Goulash with home-made dumplings a must. Four of us ate main course and a drink for about 55 euros.
We stayed in Salzburg for 4 days and could easily have stayed another 3. There is quite a lot to do and see especially over the main Christmas days. Loads of Australian tourists there. Christmas Eve is tough to find a restaurant as owners are home with family but we went to Il Sole Italian Pizzeria on the edge of the old town and it was great – full of Aussies, Brits and Americans and quite busy. The owner was run off his feet but very pleasant and good fun. Food was great and very reasonably priced. You need to book the day before.
If you want to get “up front seats” for midnight mass at the Dom (main church) then get their early as it is very crowded. If you get there late don’t bother lining up as when the gates open at 11pm for 11.30pm service, everyone just surges forward and the queues are forgotten. We arrived at 10.45pm and were seated half way down the church. Service is amazing and goes for 90 minutes and I would stay to the end – great version of Silent Night to finish. There are other services at different times in the town and also on Christmas Day so just plan to arrive early if you want a seat but don’t queue.
Special treat if its snowing is to hike up Kapuzinerberg mountain – its not strenuous at all – walk up from stairway on Linzergasse. If you want a winter wonderland in the woods – this is it!
