Frequent European travelers will know that "4-star" can mean a lot of things. In the case of Austrotel Salzburg, it means like 2 1/2 stars. First, the good. Location is good, on a relatively quiet street, with a number of stores and restaurants within a couple minutes walk. Parking is just around the block, and is cheap at 13 euros per day (with the hotel discount). The front desk is very friendly and helpful. This hotel is one of the kind where you can leave your key at the desk when you leave, and pick it up from them when you return. I like this arrangement, some people don't. Of course you don't have to leave the key with them if you don't want to. There is free juice, coffee, tea and water in the lobby. You can also walk to the Old Town in about 10 - 15 minutes. And free wifi which is always a big plus in Europe.
So, the bad. The rooms are small and old. Even more so than your typical "4-star" small Euro hotel. The rooms are also kind of ugly. I wouldn't say they're not clean, but they're definitely not spotless. Bathroom is pretty bad. Lousy shower. And the heat is spotty. Beds aren't that great. Some outlets didn't work. Wifi although free was really slow. No soap in the bathroom.
So, the verdict. I don't really have anything against this hotel, but I wouldn't stay there again. For the same money I'm sure you can do better in Salzburg.
