“Ideal modest hotel for salzburg break”

We stayed at Hotel Gablerbrau for three nights as part of an Inghams multi centre holiday.

The hotel is ideally located in a queit street just across the river from the altstadt - a few minutes walk to all the attractions in the old part of the city.

This is an old historic hotel with lots of period charm, including creaking floorboards. Our bedroom on the second floor was smallish but with a comfortable bed, small table and tv. The bathroom was spacious (inc full size bath with shower over) and there was ample storage via a large wardrobe in the lobby area. The room was secondary double glazed but there was no air conditioning - not a problem when we stayed but may have been a problem in the July pan European heatwave. Although our room overlooked other street restaurants this did not generate any problems. We did however experience the early morning street cleaning/ rubbish removal disturbance reported by some other Tripadvisor members.

A good buffet breakfast was provided which set us up for the day. We were on a half board package and the evening dinner in the charming traditional Richard Mayer Stube was varied, good quality and with huge portions.

We spent three enjoyable and exhausting days exploring Salzburg and its environs, visiting all the usual sights. We bought a 48hr Salzburg card offering free admissions and free local transport. This was good value if you planned your days to take advantage of the offers - a trip up the Untersberg mointain by cable car recovers almost two thirds of the card cost but you need a good visibility day for this.

We have been to Salzburg several times on day excursions and it remains for us a stunning compact city. Its only downside are the inevitable huge crowds of tourists from 10.00am-4.00pm. Nevertheless there are one or two places you can get away from the hordes , eg the easily accessible Kapuzinberg hill on the new town side of the river and the high level walk from the Augustiner Brau towards the Hohe Festung.

Outside of the annual August Music Festival (very expensive) Salzburg musically tends to be mostly Mozart for tourists and Sound Of Music related stuff. (Vienna has much more to offer in this respect.)

“NICE TOO STAY. PARKING FACILITIES. NEAR EVERYTHING”

This was the niciest surprise in may trip. The hotel is very good choice if you´re looking for a nice place with a nice price. And it is located just a 2 minutes walking from the river and the main pedestrian bridge to the old town and the Mirabell Park. Thay also offers a discount in a parking place (Mirabell) for those arrinving by car. And more than this, since we arrived, all de employees treat us so very kindly that we´re felt in home.
Just 2 nights, but unforgetable ones.

“Top quality hotel with gourmet food and good pricing”

I stayed here for one night in a twin room with my friend, after our ski holiday. The hotel was a last minute find offered to us by Austrian Tourist Information over the phone. They got us a special rate of 90€ per room per night which we were very happy with, being one day away from our visit.

On arrival in Salzburg we found the hotel was some distance from the train station, perhaps 10-15 minutes' walk. However, once we found it, we didn't mind the trek - we could tell this was a top class hotel. Everything is immaculate and very professional, from the luxurious lobby and friendly reception staff right up to the spacious ensuite rooms and chocolates laid on the pillows. I would rate this as a four-star hotel minimum.

The hotel is a tall building set right among Salzburg's picturesque streets, just a few minutes' walk away from the main shopping area. But for eating at night, you won't even need to go that far. The hotel is adjoined by its own upmarket brasserie-style restaurant where we ate a delicious mid-priced meal with our friends. The quality food and drink in this establishment is a real feather in the cap of the Gablerbräu hotel. Surely as good a meal as you will find anywhere in Salzburg.

To top it all off, we got up at 8 the next morning to eat our complementary breakfast before departing. The breakfast buffet was a real spread of quality foods - cereals, juices, tea, coffee, pastries, breads, cold meats, fruit, yoghurts - truly everything we could have wished for. When we were filled up and ready to leave, the reception staff called us a taxi to take us to the airport - a service you would expect in any hotel, but for us, the final piece of evidence that the Gablerbräu experience really was perfection.

If I come back to Salzburg I am definitely staying here again.

“It's NOT worth the location!!!”

I stayed here about 2 years before writing this and the only reason I remembered was because my cousin is going to Salzburg and I was able to advise her where to NOT STAY! I was there during the music festival so they charged as much as a luxury hotel in Prague because there were so many people there. The room was not nice at all. The building only looks historical from the outside. The inside has no character at all. The hallways are ugly. The furniture is dated and not in a quaint antique way. The staff were not helpful. If you are there in summer and it is hot, you will NOT be able to sleep if you go to bed before 3 or 4 a.m. The bars below the hotel have people outside screaming and drinking all night long. You have choices: sleep on semi-clean sheets in a pool of sweat with the windows closed yet still hear the drunks below for about 180 US Dollars a night (or whatever they are fleecing people for during that crowded festival time) or sleep with the windows open, hardly feel any breeze and listen to the drunks scream at full volume. And the hint of tobacco smoke from below will really please you as well. It made me homesick for smoke-filled restaurants in Japan. At least they are air-conditioned. Stay somewhere else or avoid staying in Salzburg all together during the music festival. It's a beautiful place but not great when it is wall to wall people. One more thing, the floor in my room was lop-sided. My suitcase with wheels could roll across the room as if it were going downhill.

“Great Holiday in Salzburg”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2009

The hotel was in a great position right on the tram network, so it was very easy to catch a tram to the city as they run every 5 minutes. The hotel was very clean, the staff were very helpful and polite with nothing too much trouble. The breakfast was of a very high standard with lots of choices. Free internet was provided which was a plus.
