We've traveled all over Europe and have had the luxury of staying at several Falkensteiner hotels. The Hotel Asia & Spa definitely did not meet the standard we have come to expect from this reliable brand.
The disappointment starts at the reception desk. We'd arrived at 1pm. A reasonable time we thought, as we wanted to experience the Spa for at least the afternoon and early evening. The room was not quite ready. Instead of offering a solution to help us get to the Spa, they said we could waste some time by visiting the town center (which is pretty dull by any standard) a 10 minute walk away. The lack of a warm welcome, dis-interest in the customer and poor appearance of the receptionist set the scene for the remainder of our stay.
Having wasted an hour of our time, we returned to the hotel, and swiftly went to our room to get changed for the Asia Spa experience.
Rooms:
At first impression, the rooms were clean and tidy. But at close inspection, there were several deficiencies.
1-The minibar was not filled with the drinks that were available on the menu. I was concerned that they would end up charging us for the drinks that were not even in the mini bar. I informed the staff just to ensure there was no misunderstanding.
2-The pillows were very thin and soft. After a short look round the room, i came to the conclusion that there were no extra pillows.
3-After having a shower in the bathroom, i realized that the drain was not draining as fast as the shower was pouring. Being a modern designed bathroom, and having no shower tray, the water began to run into the main bathroom area. This of course limits the amount of time you can shower (to about 1.5 min and is another one of the long list of annoying things that you don't expect from a Falkensteiner.
Ohh!!.... and the shower gel dispenser was cracked. Every time you squeezed for some shower gel, instead of dispensing from the nozzle, it would burst out of the side of the bottle.
4-Coffee machine was not cleaned. The tabs from the previous guest were still in the machine and needed emptying. Not what i would call 4**** standard.
Spa area:
1- Having dressed our bath robes, we walked to the Spa area through an underground tunnel. The tunnel looked like a building site which took away from the excitement of going to what we thought was a luxurious spa complex.
2- As we walked around exploring the Spa area, we realized that the it was only a small sectioned area, which was part of a public swimming bath. We walked for 20 minutes trying to find a place to sit and put our things. We quickly saw that we were not the only ones and there were at least 6 other couples doing the same. Again....not what we were expecting from a 4**** service. We were expecting at least a few chairs for guest that were staying in the hotel.
3- It was quite obvious the hotel had let in far more people than the place would accommodate in comfort. Some guests were walking naked around the Spa area...oustide the designated FKK area. This was obviously a result of over-filling the Spa and FKK guests spilling over into the reserved public area.
4- We've been to many Spas in our time and we have to say that the water temperature was far too cold considering it was mid winter. At this point onwards, we knew that the whole weekend was ruined, as we would not be able to even enjoy the supposedly "relaxing" Spa.
After a couple of hours of trying to find something to enjoy, we decided to return to the hotel and enjoy some peace and tranquility in the confines of the hotel room.
Dinner:
A few hours later, we decided to go to dinner in the hotel restaurant. We had a drink in the hotel bar, served excellently by the bartender.
1- Sitting at the bar, it was quite noticeable how thick the air was with the oily aromas from the kitchen. This was so strong that I even noticed it on my clothes the next morning when dressing for breakfast.
2- Waiting for a table, we were ignored by 3 staff members before greeted quite impolitely by a senior waiter.
3- I'm not sure why i was surprised, but both the starter and main course were delivered after a 1/2 hour wait (unacceptable) and we had to wait a further 20 minutes because at every course the wrong dish was served! At this point during our stay, we stopped finding these mistakes as disappointing and actually found it hilarious that absolutely nothing was meeting the standard a Falkensteiner would normally offer.
Breakfast:
The breakfast is obviously defined by the Falkensteiner group and definitely has nothing to be criticized.
But how it is presented to the customer is definitely unacceptable.
1- The breakfast buffet is literally 60m walk away from the breakfast area. If you'd forgotten a piece of bread or some jam, you ended up having to walk all the way there and back again. My opinion is that it could have been organized much closer to the guests or the guests closer to the buffet.
2- After a guest would finish breakfast, not a single table was properly cleaned. The dirty dishes and glasses were removed and the table was left with crumbs et al. Any guests coming for a late breakfast (like us) had a lot of trouble finding a table, even though more than half the restaurant was empty. I find that simply lazy and unacceptable for a Falkensteiner.
Reception:
In the evening of the day before departure, we had planned to leave early (as we couldn't find any reason to stay longer), but before we would leave, we decided to end the stay with a bit of fun and try out the Segways that were displayed in the reception. We'd informed the receptionist to book the Segways for 11am the next morning.
After breakfast, we come to reception to go for a ride and had noticed that the Segways were already being driven around in the courtyard by other guests.
After informing the receptionist that we had reserved the Segways for 11am, she apologized and informed us that we would have to wait for another 1/2 hour since they were being used.
I thought it may be possible to get things right if we had made an effort to tell the hotel staff what we want, but obviously they couldn't even manage to time manage the Segways. Again....disappointingly, we informed them that we were not prepared to wait and left the hotel regretting that we ever came there.
On a positive note: There were two members of staff (that we had contact with) that we felt were worthy of meeting the level of service expected from A Falkensteiner hotel. The bartender and a young waiter (unfortunately didn't note down their names). The remainder of the staff were either, ignorant to customer needs, inadequately trained or just had a poorly presented appearance.
In summary, everything that is standardized from the Falkensteiner brand functioned without criticism. But everything that was left to the hotel to manage, didn't! This would tell me that the hotel staff and management have not been trained to the right level and have no motivation or interest in meeting the expected Falkensteiner standards.
We hope that this review has 2 functions.
1- To feedback the Falkensteiner head office the damage that Falkesteiner Asia Spa is doing to the Falkensteiner brand.
2- To inform other guests, so that their relaxing weekends do not end in a comic disaster.
