“Winter wonderland”

Hotel zum Dom was a wonderful hotel placed in the Alt Stadt and made all the sights of Graz easily accessible. As we were there during the Christmas Market time, we were within walking distance of many stalls and gluhwein!

The hotel itself was clean, efficient with well proportioned, quiet rooms. Breakfast was a wide range of cold cuts, different breads, coffees and fruit juices. We had breakfast meetings and the breakfast cost was 10 euro which was good value for what was available.

I would highly recommend the hotel and would be very happy to return there.

“Old fashioned style”

Blackmage believes it is not how you get into trouble that counts, it's how you get out of it. When we arrived on Friday around mid day, I was told that due to an error in the booking they only had a single room for us that night (we were booked for two.) I explained I had booked a long time ago and that I was not prepared to accept this. A minute later they offered us either a double for two nights, which is what we had booked, or we could stay in the single for one night, which had a standard bed anyway plus we could then stay in a suite the next. This we chose. The single was adequate and the suite was enormous, with a double bedroom and living room/MedievalHall you could have held a ball in. We usually book with breakfast, but they also included breakfast in the upgrade, which at 13 Euros per person was a good way of also making up for the original error. Well done indeed. The Hotel itself is neither modern or 5 star luxury, but a charming old four star hotel which is exactly what we wanted. When Blackmage travels for business, he wants a modern hotel, but for pleasure, prefers charm.

Location is excellent, very close to the Dom (Cathedral), Mausoleum, the confusingly named Burg (because a Burg it most certainly is not!) all the quaint little streets and alleyways and yet only a few minutes to the centre on foot. It is close to all major attractions and yet it is quietly situated. A 5 minute walk takes you to the Airport Bus Stop, which is very convenient.

Breakfast was definitely hearty, keeping the Mages well contented until evening. The usual buffet fare, but of the higher quality expected in a good Austrian hotel.

Only slight niggle/advice: the showers appear to have been decommissioned from the Space Shuttles with all sorts of nozzles and adjustments and it is worth working out how they function BEFORE stepping in and getting a very invigorating cold water massage they usually deal out in the more brutal Spas!

Room Tip: The singles facing the court yard on the first floor are a little dark

“Wonderful place, excellent choice!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

The location is perfect, just a few meters from the Cathedral and in the modele of the historical center of the City. The staff is really nice and helpfull and the rooms are amazing. We had an ungrade to a suite on the top floor and it was large, very well decorated and quiet. Breakfast is also quite nice, with plenty of choices. If you are planning to spend some time in Graz, don't hesitate, this is the place to stay!

“A renovated old charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

The hotel is midrange, but has a character. An old charm. Not a luxury, but exceptionally clean and well maintained. Free internet, which is fast. Breakfast included. Attentive helpful staff. The hotel is on a quet street in the central core. 5min walk to the central square or the opera and the train station. Graz has a number of antique stores, uscale fashion stores, opera and few museums. Also, you can do wine country exploration, either on your own rentinfg a car, or with the tourist office. Their tour is on Saturdays, 2PM. Give them a call to book a seat. The wine country was a big surprise for us, it looked actulally prettier than Tuscany. Their unique feature is auslesse wines - sweet wines of "late harvest" type. The white dry wines are aslo good, but not that unique. If you like Gewurstraminer wine, their traminer is different, I'd say better, with some rose notes. Out of the museums, the most impressive is the Armoury. I have never seen so much armour in one place. The thing, which was a bit annoying that everything is in German without even short remarks in English. We travel all over and this was unusual. Most countries accept that their language is not as universal. (English is not our first language either)

“Ver pleasant surprise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

We really enjoyed this hotel; great location (slightly noisy on a weekend night, but just close the window). Great character. Graz was a great trip that included Vienna & Salzburg and worth the train travel to get there.
We stayed in one of the suites, very reasonably priced.
