I have stayed in this hotel many times and once again I can report that the excellent standards of service and quality remain as high as ever.
The Mader is located in the main town square of the old city, and is a building in keeping with the architecture of the area. Car parking is a bit of a lottery. Street parking is open all day with a small fee for day time parking, between 08:00 and 18:00. After this time parking is free. The exception is when there is the street market. (Check with reception for which days this is). The opposite side of the square must be clear by 06:00 on market days or your will be fined, or even worse, towed away. The main parking spaces in the square fill early, so on most occasions I have ended up parking by the river side. Not too far away, but an up hill struggle if you have luggage.
The reception for the hotel is on the first floor. More stairs, although there is a lift located at the back of the hotel. A warm welcome is always guaranteed. Simple registration completed you will be issued with a traditional traditional key complete with large brass fob identifying the room number. Then you begin the search for your room among the many passages and stair ways that link the many joined buildings that create this hotel. All rooms are clearly signed, but the hunt is still an adventure in itself.
The rooms are always spotlessly clean, and generally large in proportion. There are always an adequate number of wooded hanger in the wardrobe, as well as additional towels, pillows, and bed spread. All rooms have flat screen TV's. If you are a light sleeper, and wish to sleep late, then I suggest you ask for a room away from the front of the hotel. While these rooms give a beautiful view of the town square, you may well be awoken by the clock tower which starts to chime at 06:00 and does so through the day every 15 minutes.
The bathrooms generally have barely adequate lighting levels. A strange phenomenon, but one quiet common to all hotels in the area. I know not why. The showers can suffer from the eternal hotel concern of fluctuating water temperature. I have never yet been scalded by this but it remains a glitch in the very strong armour of this hotel.
On the ground floor is a lively bar which also serves food, and the main restaurant. During the summer months this is supplemented by a dinning area erected under a canopy out the front of the hotel in the square. Most restaurants and hotels do this.
The restaurant, located at the back of the hotel, serves good quality food that is generally local in style. While there is no particular concern with the menu and quality of food, it could best be described as reliable. They have a limited choice of wines but this does include some good bottles both Austrian and international.
I continue to return this hotel as from the moment I walk in I am made to feel at home and welcome. I know I will not have any concerns and can rely upon the assured quality provided. I would recommend it anyone travelling to this part of Austria.
