Hotel is located very centrally and convenient to all amenities- the staff were most pleasant and welcominn - There were three of us staying Wife / 12 yr Son and myself - We had an apartment type accomodation on third floor - You could have slept an extra few of the kids comfortably in apt. Had useful kitchen area and was spacious - including the Bathroom . Breakfasts were great and got you started for the day well - Only downside is that there was not a lift to floor three and statirs wee a bit steep .. Would go back there again though.

Room Tip: Get Room on Level 2- reception level rather tnat Three - Save the steep stair climb !

“A Pleasure as Always”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

I have stayed in this hotel many times and once again I can report that the excellent standards of service and quality remain as high as ever.

The Mader is located in the main town square of the old city, and is a building in keeping with the architecture of the area. Car parking is a bit of a lottery. Street parking is open all day with a small fee for day time parking, between 08:00 and 18:00. After this time parking is free. The exception is when there is the street market. (Check with reception for which days this is). The opposite side of the square must be clear by 06:00 on market days or your will be fined, or even worse, towed away. The main parking spaces in the square fill early, so on most occasions I have ended up parking by the river side. Not too far away, but an up hill struggle if you have luggage.

The reception for the hotel is on the first floor. More stairs, although there is a lift located at the back of the hotel. A warm welcome is always guaranteed. Simple registration completed you will be issued with a traditional traditional key complete with large brass fob identifying the room number. Then you begin the search for your room among the many passages and stair ways that link the many joined buildings that create this hotel. All rooms are clearly signed, but the hunt is still an adventure in itself.

The rooms are always spotlessly clean, and generally large in proportion. There are always an adequate number of wooded hanger in the wardrobe, as well as additional towels, pillows, and bed spread. All rooms have flat screen TV's. If you are a light sleeper, and wish to sleep late, then I suggest you ask for a room away from the front of the hotel. While these rooms give a beautiful view of the town square, you may well be awoken by the clock tower which starts to chime at 06:00 and does so through the day every 15 minutes.

The bathrooms generally have barely adequate lighting levels. A strange phenomenon, but one quiet common to all hotels in the area. I know not why. The showers can suffer from the eternal hotel concern of fluctuating water temperature. I have never yet been scalded by this but it remains a glitch in the very strong armour of this hotel.

On the ground floor is a lively bar which also serves food, and the main restaurant. During the summer months this is supplemented by a dinning area erected under a canopy out the front of the hotel in the square. Most restaurants and hotels do this.

The restaurant, located at the back of the hotel, serves good quality food that is generally local in style. While there is no particular concern with the menu and quality of food, it could best be described as reliable. They have a limited choice of wines but this does include some good bottles both Austrian and international.

I continue to return this hotel as from the moment I walk in I am made to feel at home and welcome. I know I will not have any concerns and can rely upon the assured quality provided. I would recommend it anyone travelling to this part of Austria.

“Good value for money hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2007

I have stayed in Steyr a number of times and this hotel is always my first choice. it offers clean, good quality accomodation at a good price.
The rooms are of a good size and with good quality fixtures and fittings.
The breakfast is very good. There is a good selection of rolls, ham and cheeses as well as fresh fruit. It also provides bacon and scrambeld egg or omelette for those who want more of a 'cooked' breakfast.
The staff are helpful and the majority speak good English.
It is situated in the main town square (stadtplatz) which is cobbled and surrounded by picturesque old buildings. Plenty of cafes and shops in the square or nearby.
Only eaten in the restaurant / bar area once but it was OK. Plenty of good nearby restaurants (Akropolis very good and so is Chinese a few doors up from this).

“A Family Appartment Overlooking Steyr's Beautiful Hauptplatz”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2006

The Gasthof Mader is two late-medieval town houses co-joined to form a spacious and charming hotel. The hotel is right in the middle of Steyr's lovely Hauptplatz. It has a central arcade running the length of the establishment with a Gastube, vinotek, bar and restaurants all contained within. If Steyr were not such a beautiful place to visit, one could lose most of ones stay within the confines of the Mader itself.

My wife and I, with our four month old daughter, stayed in the Mader for four nights in October 2006. I had asked for a 'Superior' room at a rate of approx. eur 135, per night. The rate, whilst not cheap, did not alert us to the fact that the room was in fact an actual one bedroom apartment, with separate living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, hall and bedroom. The icing on the cake was a beautiful view over Steyr's Hauptplatz.

We ate in the Altwirth's Stube and the Schübertstüberl. Both good meals with an excellent native wine list.

My only regret was not spending longer, either in Steyr, or in the Mader.
