We stayed here on our honeymoon in October 2011 and we could not have picked a better town or b&b - I cannot recommend this place enough!
The Pension is situated just outside of the centre (a couple of minutes walk) and is right on the lake. Our room was actually an apartment, with a seperate kitchen/diner/lounge area which had a balcony overlooking the lake, as did our bedroom - we slept with the curtains open and woke up to the most amazing mountain view each morning. The owner could not have been more helpful and friendly, advising us on the best places to visit, the weather, giving us maps and discount vouchers; and he even had bikes for us to borrow for the day. Although we had an apartment we took the breakfast option and were not disappointed - a selection of fresh bread and rolls, cereals, tea & coffee and a boiled egg cooked to order (soft boiled to perfection every day!). There is a decent sized supermarket at the other end of the town if you would rather arrange your own breakfast - we bought supplies for a picnic each day. Pension Sarstein does not have a reception as such but we did not have any problems with that - we had advised them of our approx arrival time and on ringing the bell, the owner arrived very quickly. He gave us a card so that we could drive into the town with our bags, and we were able to park alongside the road tunnel for free as the Pension has its own reserved spaces.
Hallstatt is a lovely quaint town - there are some lovely buildings and the centre is mostly pedestrianised during the day. I would throughly recommend the cable car up to the five fingers and the caves etc for amazing views back over Hallstatt. The salt mine is also well worth a visit, with amusing wooden slides to get you from cave to cave! (be warned - check opening times as the caves and salt mine season finishes 26 October - luckily we arrived 2 days before this!) There are lots of trails for walking and cycling and we definitely could have stayed another week and still not seen it all.
We ate at a selection of hotel restaurants in the town, all of which served lovely traditional food including fish from the lake. We did note a few restuarants were closed due to the fact it was the end of the season, but we found enough selection still open at the hotels. There is a small bar in the main square which was quite lively in the evenings and we also spent a few evenings in the bar at the hotel at the top of the square (i cant remember the name) drinking schnapps with the bar staff! As it was the end of the season, the town was not busy at all - i am not sure whether this is still the case in the height of summer, but the place has not been over-run with commercial places so i can't see this being the case.
We were so sad to leave Hallstatt, and are planning to go back next year staying again at the welcoming Pension Sarstein.
