My Husband, myself, and our dog spent Thanksgiving weekend at this charming lakefront Hotel. The staff is wonderful (Thank you Sandra and Erik)! We visited the hotel in the extreme off-season, which was fine with us because we had the entire village to ourselves. In talking with some locals, I understand that Hallstatt can become quite 'overcrowded' in the summer, so I am glad that we chose to visit in November. The Hotel itself is very old, which adds to it's charm. That being said- it has obviously undergone some major renovations inside, since the rooms are tastefully decorated, and very modern in the interior. There is even a sauna on the second floor, which we unfortunately did not have the time to explore. We had a lovely lakefront room with a balcony, which I must say is worth the splurge! Even though the weather outside was below freezing...we bundled up and enjoyed a glass of wine on our balcony every evening, taking in every second of that beautiful view. The breakfast was also wonderful. It was the traditional Austrian selection of breads, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, muesli, and they surprisingly had eggs and bacon which was a nice addition. If you travel to Hallstatt in the off-season..you are able to drive into the 'city' center, and park your car, free of charge, in the nearby lot. As for nightlife/entertainment, that is one thing Hallstatt lacks. We were looking to relax so it was a perfect Holiday for us. Overall, we really enjoyed our short trip to Hallstatt, and the Seehotel Gruner Baum made it especially cozy for us. I would definitely return again sometime.
