“great town, beautiful lake, old hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

The hotel is full of personality. It is old and wooden with interesting decoration and a winding staircase that gets smaller the higher up you go. we had a room with a lake view, as long as you didn't mind sitting on the 'private' veranda with a door leading to the hall way and half blocked off from the room accross the hall. Also the view was 1/8th lake and the rest an old rusty roof from next door- so check if you want uninterupted views. It was lovely to sit outside though and despite the higildy-pigildy way the place is set out it has it's own charm.
The room was dark, with one light and two lamps. The tv didn't work. The bathroom was tiny, and the shower... oh my, the shower. It burnt me. It went from freezing cold, to warm to boiling hot for no apparent reason and was totally upsetting. Also there was some 'gooey' stuff on the bathroom tiles which could have been cleaned. Also had to open the shower door if you want to wash your feet as there isn't enough room in the cubicle.
The beds were very uncomfortable. One was so springy it was like a broken trampoline that you just sink into and it squeaked terribly with any movement. The other one was as hard as a rock, to the point of making you wish you were sleeping in your car instead.
Parking- there isn't any. And the staff at the hotel must be used to this being a 'suprise' as she was quite defensive and started telling us that 'Hallstatt' is such a small town that we shouldn;t expect parking etc, even though we hadn't said anything. They do have an arrangement with the parking lot down the road and the first night is free. It is outside of town and takes about 10 maybe 15mins to walk there. So for only one night stay we re packed a couple of things in a carry bag. The next day it rained (of course) and we walked back to our car in the pouring rain- don't expect any sympathy from the staff, who despite the pouring rain out side since about 4am said 'oh ... is it raining... I hadn't noticed!'
the restaurant that they own is lovely. though again the staff were a bit muddled with who could sit where. But the food was fine and the view is of the lake and is stunning.
the Heritage down the road has it's own car park, so if this is important to you maybe pay the extra, they also have a stunning spot on the lake and are a couple of mins stroll to the market square.

“Beware of room 10”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

I reserved a room months in advance and was promised a lake vew balcony. I should have read more of the trip advisor's reviews because I was expecting one of the beautiful balconies with the lake view. Instead, as already photographed in a previous review, our room was on the BACK side of the hotel. The room window had no view at all and the side door was to a public balcony with a table and ash-tray which looked mainly onto the neighbor's roof. You could partially see a little bit of the lake. This was a birthday present and was supposed to be the highlight of our trip. The room was so dark and gloomy. The other balconies were beautiful with flowers. I am showing an outside photograph with an arrow pointing to the room 10 balcony which did not even have any flowers (probably because there was not enough sunlight getting past the neighbor's roof. The other side balcony was quite beautiful and I am sure the front rooms had lovely views as described in the more recent reviews.

We asked the host if we could have one of the rooms with a real view, like in the photographs, and he said they were all taken. I was very disappointed and said we had been promised lake view balcony. He suggested we try the Heritage Hotel down the street, and fortuately they did have a view room available. However, it was much more expensive.

“Disappointing”

During a recent three week trip to Germany and Austria this was the location and hotel I was most looking forward to. It was to be the spot that we could just relax and enjoy the beautiful lake view from the room I had reserved with a balcony.

When we arrived, mid- afternoon, all the balcony rooms with the lake view had been given to other guests. We did have a room with a view of the lake but the tree in front of the hotel blocked most of the view when you were sitting at the table and chairs. To make matters worse the wait staff and cooks played a noisy game of soccer for a hour and twenty minutes on the street just below our window. No balcony, limited view, no relaxing!

Our room was clean but the small shower had mold in the grout so we ended up not using the shower. The breakfast that was included was very nice.

“Don't hesitate, it's gorgeous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2010

I think that the Braugasthof Lobisser deserves all of the good things that have been said about it. We loved pretty much everything about this place - obviously, the lakeside location is superb but what we really enjoyed was its unique character and ambience.

We usually like to stay in places with a certain faded charm about them but, whilst it has charm by the bucketload, there's nothing shabby about the Braugasthof. Laden with antiques and wearing the patina of the years, the whole building is beautifully cared for. From the creak of the stairs to the warmth of the welcome, the hotel feels just like one of those inns that you read about in old novels - for all the right reasons.

We had a room at the top with a balcony overlooking the lake and spent a few idle hours happily watching the comings and goings of the town. The bed was good, the bathroom simple but fine (if a little dated) and there was an antique tiled stove in our room which we are still coveting. Nothing was especially luxurious, but the overall sense of comfort was palpable.

The breakfast selection was extensive, the people kind (to the point of helping us to lug our heavy suitcases up the stairs, even though we arrived at a busy time - during a wedding reception). The whole place felt relaxed and homely (in the best sense of the word) with nothing particularly contrived about it - a pleasing blend of furniture and art that has evolved with the family over the years.

We ate dinner there and it was also memorable; had the weather been better, we would have enjoyed an evening on the lakeside terrace but the inner dining room was atmospheric enough.

The only thing I would mention is the fact that they don't seem to check their emails daily, so it might take them a while to respond to your initial enquiry. Be patient, it's worth it.

“Wonderful view Hallstatter See!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2010

Nice little hotel. The rooms are not very big, no elevator or modern facilities, but a really wonderful view over the lake, wooden and precious old-fashioned decoration, kind staff, nice breakfast and breakfast room. We loved it.
