“Like an old friend even though I’ve been just the once”

I’m saddened by the preceding review, what bad luck. I booked on-line about 3 months before and there was no problem. This long-established independent family run hotel is just outside Krems; in Stein, and this makes it ideal to explore the Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal wine regions, without enduring the busy city of Krems itself. It was fully booked in early June, so be aware. It’s quiet and clean; offers free cycle hire and a pool; the staff are invariably friendly and helpful, and tolerant of a non-german speaking guest. Wifi is charged extra. Breakfast is excellent; dinner was basic and not elaborate; quite appetising but not the gourmet experience the publicity suggests - but has an excellent and good value wine list. The “river-facing” rooms will struggle to get a glimpse of the Danube due to enormous chestnut trees blocking the view, so a rear-facing room may be the better bet, as it will be quieter. I found the bed a bit hard. Good authentic Austrian cuisine with local wines within walking / cycling distance are Nikolaihof at Mautern and Knoll at Unterloiben; both recommended – and I’m glad I stayed at the Am Forthof.

“Krems is a beautiful little town on Danube~Gourtmet Hotel Not so much”

I took holiday to Krems Au for the Donau Festival that they have every year. Arrived on train at Vienna late in the evening, after 10:00pm and called to let the front desk of the Gourtmet Hotel Am Forthof know that we were on the way. To my suprise, although my room was booked and paid for months in advance, they had given my room to someone else. I was very tired, angry and homeless for one night in Vienna before they would have another room availible for the remainder of my stay. No discounts, no upgrades and no appoligies were offered. I found the staff to be unhelpful and unkind. They made a stink even to call a taxi for me as a guest. Rooms have a country charm but are very cold and don't have AC or working heat.
Although Krems is a beautiful town and I hope to visit again, I will NEVER stay at Gourtmet Hotel Am Forthof.

“An ideal base for a holiday in the Wachau”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2006

The hotel is located at the western end of Stein, which is in itself the western part of the city of Krems (in itself well worth a visit). Stein consists mainly of a main street, featuring over 100 houses dating from the 16th to 17th century - and a wonderful Kunsthalle with changing exhibitions.
The wachau, the region between Krems and Melk, is one of the most beautiful parts of the Danube valley, and can be explored very well by taking this small, but nearly perfect hotel as a basis - all the more, since the use of (quite ok) bycicles is included in the hotel price (there is also a small pool).
The hotel features a gorgeous garden (in the summer a beautiful place for dinner or breakfast), cosy rooms with all relevant amenities (although, as far as I noticed, no air conditioning), smallish, but impeccably clean baths, and some new, some antique furniture.
As in all longish villages in a river valley, traffic is never far away, which makes - at least during the day - for the only sometimes audible draw-back.
The main attraction should be dinner at the hotel, which does not call itself gourmet for nothing. It sports 13 Gault Millaut points, and the cuisine would probably deserve at least one more on account of the dinner I had. Food was excellent, the overwhelmingly huge choice of very good local wine the more so - but made manageable by the fact, that most (all?) of them were available by the glass.
