I’m saddened by the preceding review, what bad luck. I booked on-line about 3 months before and there was no problem. This long-established independent family run hotel is just outside Krems; in Stein, and this makes it ideal to explore the Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal wine regions, without enduring the busy city of Krems itself. It was fully booked in early June, so be aware. It’s quiet and clean; offers free cycle hire and a pool; the staff are invariably friendly and helpful, and tolerant of a non-german speaking guest. Wifi is charged extra. Breakfast is excellent; dinner was basic and not elaborate; quite appetising but not the gourmet experience the publicity suggests - but has an excellent and good value wine list. The “river-facing” rooms will struggle to get a glimpse of the Danube due to enormous chestnut trees blocking the view, so a rear-facing room may be the better bet, as it will be quieter. I found the bed a bit hard. Good authentic Austrian cuisine with local wines within walking / cycling distance are Nikolaihof at Mautern and Knoll at Unterloiben; both recommended – and I’m glad I stayed at the Am Forthof.
