“A Lovely Hotel looking out over the Danube, run by a hard working family who are extremely pleasant and helpful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2011

A Lovely Hotel looking out over the Danube at Durnstein. The view is fantastic! It is managed entirely by a hard working family who are extremely pleasant and helpful to their guests. Nothing at all was too much bother for them. The restaurant is excellent as were the local wines which they were offered with knowledge and pride.

We stayed in a room with a fantastic view looking out over the Danube and there was absolutely no problem of any traffic noise.

There is a nice Bar, and Spa, Sauna and Beauty Parlour facilities are on the top floor and available to those who want this. I would say that overall this Hotel was good value, with safe, spacious and well lit parking bays at no extra charge.

The public rooms and bedrooms were exceptionally clean. The Hotel is pleasant and immaculate and I would recommend it to anyone.

“Pool is Sublime”

We spend lots of time in Vienna, and wanted to head out to the country for a bit. Our friends recommended the Wachau, and I found this place over the internet and booked it over the phone from the states. It embodies every element of Austrian hospitality. Americans who love cushy and plush and effusive service may not be happy, but I would argue that very few Austrian accommodations would meet these needs.

We stayed in the main building in a larger room with a balcony overlooking the Danube. The whole place was exceptionally clean and perhaps some Americans would feel it a bit sterile, but our room was big, the common areas large, the restaurant spacious, and the staff helpful. The food was very good the second night, the first night it was a bit blah, but I overheard that the head chef was not working that night, so that would explain it. The wine was superb.

I must tell you that the new spa perched atop the main building is absolutely sublime. The pool is something like a steel infinity pool, with views of Schloss Durnstein, the Danube, and the vineyards. It is hands down the best part of this place. The inside spa area is beautiful... high ceilings, windows galore, lounge chairs and blankets and water and towels and a series of unbelievable saunas that I have never seen before. Aroma therapy, sea salt, UV, high heat/low humidity type saunas... it was so cool to try all these saunas, relax outside on the pool deck, swim, then feel like a million bucks as you stroll down to a heurigen or eat at the restaurant.

“Average hotel without much atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

After recommendation from friends we stayed at this hotel as we were visiting the Wachau wine district. Our friends said the new rooms where great, but unfortunately they were not available, so we stayed in a steinfeder doubleroom and apartment. Rooms were of good size, but a bit old in style (and smell) and without any atmosphere and the same goes for the hotelwing we stayed in. People at the desk were nice and helpfull, but otherwise the atmosphere was rather anonymous. The girl that showed us the room smiled, but she did not do a great job in helping us to the room or serving (perhaps she was new). Breakfast not great - staff were slow to fill up and they did not seem very attentive at all. In fact you did not see much staff at the hotel at all. Very little cheese. Bread rather dry and uninteresting. Coffee from the big coffeemachine tasted awfull (to our taste). We tried the restaurant one evening and the food was also not fantastic. Soup without fresh taste. Not nearly as good as restaurants in the area at the same price level. We felt that the hotel is too expensive for what we got. We did not see the swimmingpool (it is outdoor) or spa - it was closed as the weather was bad. This hotel is situated on the mainroad 1km from Dürnstein. Next time we will definately stay in Dürnstein instead. The town has lots of atmosphere and the area is really interesting.

“Charming family owned and run hotel and winery”

Charming family owned and run hotel and winery. Good location and great wines! Go for the room with a view of the Danube and the 7 course wine pairing was just fantastic. The service and staff were wonderful and super knowledgeable. Highly recommend the wine weekend for two package! Couldn’t have asked for a better Wachau experience.

“What a lovely hotel!”

Wow! This hotel has recently been renovated and it is delightful! I can't say enough good things about it. The room was huge, and had a lovely, large deck overlooking the Danube. The bathroom was very spacious with a wonderful spa type shower. The staff was friendly and helpful. Their house wine was outstanding and we had a great dinner in the hotel dining room. The breakfast buffet was the best we experienced on our trek along the Danube.
