“Absence of service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

When booking online I added the information that my cousin (name given to the hotel) had prebooked a number of rooms in the occassion of this 80th birthday, and that I should have the special rate you had promised him. My additional information was not even read, much less acted upon. I ended up paying double the price negotiated by my cousin. This was not discovered until I checked in, and the hotel had already charged my credit card for the full seven nights I was staying. My complaints were met with a shrug from management. The neighbourhood is untidy. There are even a lot of chickens in a plot nearby, resulting in aggressive flies. Could not eat outdoors.

“Good points and bad points - you decide!”

We stayed in the Tasiana Star apartments for a week in October. Arriving on late evening we were greeted by the family (all spoke English) who were all in the reception area and promptly allocated our room. The first issue started there, when the bathroom light was broken. To be fair to them, they came to the room and fixed it within 5 minutes.

The apartment was extremely basic, and whilst 'self catering', we had to ask for extra cooking utensils and pans as we planned to cook on a couple of the evenings. The shower wasn't very powerful at all but we made do. What the tour operator should have highlighted to us was the major building work happening on our floor, which in the day was very noisy. As we weren't there much we didn't complain, but would have had good grounds to ask for replacement accommodation.

The biggest positive was the pool area. Nice and peaceful with no kids running around (this complex really wouldn't be suitable for young children) and sun beds were always available. The bar was reasonably priced inline with other local bars and restaurants, and the music was at a reasonable volume.

The complex is set back from the main road running along the coast, but only 5 minutes walk from all the main bars and restaurants so excellently located. The local beaches aren't much to write home about, but we took a 10 minute bus ride to Governors Beach which was just fantastic. The buses only charge €2 for an all day pass, and are air-conditioned and very smart.

Overall it was a nice holiday. The issues we had in the apartment complex were dealt with, but they were things you shouldn't have to ask about in the first place. Tasiana Star apartments weren't the nightmare scenario that other reviews suggest, but my 'poor' rating is also on the basis that for the price of 2* self catering in Cyprus we could have gone 4/5* all inclusive in Egypt for the same price or less.

If you have any questions, please send me a message. :-)

Room Tip: Try and get a room overlooking the pool and bar area. The music isn't on loud or until late so...

“Good for what you pay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

We booked for a week in the first week of September. This was to be for a large family get together with other family members already booked in other various hotels. With that in mind, the location was important and we knew that we would only really need the room for sleeping as we would be out most of the time, hence I was happy selecting Tasiana Star complex at a low rate. So all we wanted was a clean, tidy, room and what we got was better than I would have expected from a budget 2* hotel. We actually had 3 rooms for our party and judging by some of the reviews on here, I guess we must have been lucky, because all were very spacious and clean and none of us saw a single cockroach. I do not want to big the place up because it is undoubtably tired and seen better days, but I really do think that if you only pay the rates that this hotel comes for, then you really should not expect anything more than what we got. As I say, we may have been lucky with our rooms and the location of them but if I ever fancied another budget holiday in Limassol then I would not have a problem going back.

Room Tip: We had the front rooms on the ground floor with balconies of the Tasiana star complex which were per...

“A little disappointing.............”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

Day 1:My partner, son and I booked two apartments. We arrived late at night (added time was wasted as the taxi found the complex hard to locate). The guy at reception was courteous but on taking us to the apartments, he was a bit dismissive. My first call was to open the kitchenette cupboard doors in what was to be my son's room. I am afraid that Mr C Roach was at home!!! I mentioned this to our host, who said, " We have cockroaches in this country. There's nothing you can do. They fly in.". I pointed out that I was aware of the large, flying variety but these were the small, running (non-flying) variety. He said that he would arrange for the area to be sprayed.
Day 2: We unpacked and explored the apartments further. Our kitchenette had a very effective fridge, which was great as we needed to store stuff for packed lunches and breakfast. The fridge was clean and a good seal meant that we could be confident that our food would not be attracting the local wildlife. The folk who complain about ants, slugs and cats (and FLYING roaches) need to accept that these are part of the natural environment. Clear up after yourself and you'll be fine. The ants don't like anti-bac spray.

On the downside: the kitchenettes had a random collection of cutlery and crockery. The dented and rusty turrine was definitely unusable.many of the other items looked like they had been put away by those who had last used them- dirty! Only after spending a significant portion of our first morning cleaning food preperation areas and utensils were we able to prepare breakfast and snack lunches.

We used our kitchenette throughout our stay, as despite ours (and the lady who serviced the rooms) best attempts, Mr C Roach remained in residence in my son's apartment and, in fact made some friends So his kitchenette was unusable.

Rooms reasonably clean, apart from cockroaches. Shower temperature- great. Bedding changed regularly. Towels were elderly and discoloured and were not changed during our week. (Thankfully, we had brought our own towels.)

Derisory comments about the pool area at the Tasiana do not reflect our experience. We found the pool to be clean and safe. The only litter was from inconsiderate users. The lady who attended to the pool was passionately cleaning when we used the pool.

It was necessary to pay for air-con. as long as you understand that this is an additional charge-it's fine and effective.

We did not feel, as other reviewers have mentioned, a threat to security. However, it must be noted that not all rooms have a safety deposit box (ours didn't).

THINGS WE LOVED:
Cypriana Taxi (very near the apt)- Lovely local firm who took us on a fabulous tour of the Troodos Mountains.

Cafe Brio: Fantastic hospitality. Food is amazing. You are doing yourself a disservice if you don't go. (located at Hallmark Complex).Cuisine largely Italian. (Landmark:Starbucks)

St Raphael Bay - Gorgeous sandy beach. Great for kids. Jet ski and other watersports, very well controlled in terms of safety.

Torist Information: (on the left of the dual carriage way, heading west). Helpful, knowledgable staff. Free maps and booklets.

AIDA car hire- Very professional set up. Almost opposite Torist Information.

Buses: They are reputed to be infrequent- we found the buses (particularly no 30) reliable & cheap. 2 euros to ride up and down the Limassol coast all day, Kids go free!

Summary: We felt that there was a lack of co-ordinated management of the Marianna Apartments. The lady who serviced our rooms wanted to help when we raised issues but some of the issues were beyond her remit. Someone should take ownwership, for the sake of the customers but also the business. It may only be a matter of time before the roaches take hold of many apts (they are so invasive!). This could pose serious health and repuational issues.
