“Great Hotel”

Just returned from three weeks at Sammys hotel (Only booked holiday there as had visited it 7/8 years ago in summer and found it good value and very friendly) and were pleased to see that it still maintained high standards. Went 2 weeks half board and 1 week B and B. with Mercury Direct. Unfortunately the first two days had power strikes but these were resolved and also the weather was not good to start with. As to the hotel some of the bathrooms are a little too small, the food is average (but take into account the price and its good value),and there also had been a smell of smoke in some rooms (and possibly some lingered from staff who smoked by fire escape but it did permutate inside the stairwell) The bedroom lighting is really poor! Having said that it's comfortable walking distance to the harbour, the pool area is is really nice with a swim up to bar and good condition deck chairs sunshades etc, Everywhere in the hotel is clean and tidy and the staff are fantastic, nothing is seen as two much trouble. Prices in the bar are very reasonable and the rooms have tea/coffee facilities, really comfortable beds, hair driers, fridges and tv plus piping hot water for showering etc. I would highly reccomend "Sammys" as it' offers exceptional value. “Brilliant staff, bad management”

We stayed at Sammy's for 10 days over the New Year period. All staff, without exception, were friendly and genuine in their welcome and desire to please. It is without doubt the staff which are the attraction in this hotel.

An a la carte menu was prominently displayed, however this was unavailable during our stay. The only way to eat in the evening was to choose from two dishes but only if ordered in the morning. the alternative is a twenty minute walk into town. This we found preferable.

The cleaning staff were efficient and friendly but management policy seemed to be that the cleaners be limited in the amount of work to be undertaken, they did not have a carpet cleaner or vacuum. The carpets were littered with pieces of fabric, cotton and even a drawing pin left by previous occupants. This debris remained for our stay. The television worked sporadically and a pipe to the bathromm sink had a bad leak.

What really distressd us was the belligerence of the new owners. Staff were visibly frightened of them. Guests were glowered at and when one complained the owner became most unpleasant. during our stay we witnesed one elderly man in tears after an encounter with the owner. His travel company moved him to another hotel in Girne/Kyrenia. A large proportion of guests had stayed previousdly, all were unhappy with the new management.

“Surely not 3 stars worth”

Reception, bar and restaurant staff worked so hard to create a really warm, friendly and helpful atmosphere, and the chambermaids kept the rooms fairly clean, tidy and changed towels on request. The rest was not so good. It's not so warm there in the winter and the heating in the bedroom was by aircon unit only, with no heating or air extraction in the bathroom, so trying to get towels dry was a major exercise. The bathroom fittings were dated and badly in need of substantial repair and replacement, as was the TV, and the telephone had to be disconnected because it rang intermittently during the night. Hotel rules and regulations plastered the walls. The hotel is also located next door to an underground nightclub and mini-market, and although musical noise pollution was not a problem the interminable and noisy aircon equipment certainly was. The choice for evening meals was restricted to 1 of 2 options each day from an uninspiring menu repeated each week. General quality was poor, and on several occasions the specified side salad failed to appear with no explanation or compensating item, and the sweet rarely coincided with the menu. Ice-cream was a frequent offering. After booking the hotel on the strength of good reviews we were extremely disappointed to say the least. I hope that Mercury Direct will think again before committing any more of it's unsuspecting clients to this establishment.

“Four weeks in December”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Having read previous excellent reviews I could not recognise this hotel last month [December], with the exception of the references to the excellent work of the reception and bar staff. They made my own experiences bearable but there was little else to recommend it apart from the location. I believe that a recent change in management may have been responsible but fior me, never again

Room Tip: Higher the better and a balcony, although small,is essential

“Sammy's was disappointing.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

My wife and I stayed here in December on the strength of the good reviews. The hotel is situated in a residential area about 15 minutes walk from the harbour. It is a family run business but we had little contact with the family apart from the cigarette smoke emanating from the office in the mornings, that tended to pervade the hotel.
We agree with previous comments that the four guys who look after the reception, bar, waiter duties are very helpful and pleasant. Beyond that our opinion differs.
The rooms were dingy and dimly lit. The balconies overlooked some waste ground belonging to the hotel. Although the rooms had tired carpets the cleaners, in our experience, did not have a carpet sweeper or vacuum cleaner. There was a small piece of tissue on our floor which stayed there for a week. We deliberately did not pick it up.
There was a 'fridge with a notice on front: 'STRICTLY NO DRINK OR FOOD ALLOWED IN ROOMS'. What was the'fridge for?
There was some tea making kit in a cupboard with another notice: 'THERE ARE SIX COMPLIMENTARY TEABAGS. WHEN THEY ARE USED YOU CAN PURCHASE MORE'.
The shower was a dribble and there was no plug for the basin.
The food was poor during our stay. We did not care for the frozen vegetables every night. There is nothing worse than frozen cauliflower. In spite of the shops being full of wonderful produce we did not get any fresh vegetables.
We stayed the week because our fellow guests, although few, were great company. They were leaving at the end of the week so we transferred to another hotel; with the help of the very capable Cyprus Premier representative, Merih.
