Stayed at the Colony 18th Oct-25th Oct 2011 as part of a twin centre deal through Green Island Holidays.
It was not our original intention to stay at this Hotel, however we got such a good deal through the Green Island Representitive (Times travel show Earls Court) we could'nt say No.
The Flight from Istanbul was with Pegasus airlines into Ercan Airport. It took about 1 3/4 hours. The Transfer from Ercan to the Hotel took approximately 45 Minutes.
From the minute we arrived we were impressed the front of house from bell boy to reception staff were wonderful. We did'nt see our cases from the minute they were put on the transfer coach until they arrived in our room.
The Room was larger than expected with a large king size bed and great flat screen TV. A Nice touch was our name already programmed onto the Television. The Bathroom was a nice size with a shower and bath provided with plenty of hot water.
There are no Tea or coffee making facilities within the room. The Fridge Bar was expensive by outside standards but what do people expect from a 5* Hotel.
Breakfast throughout the week was to a consistantly high standard with plenty of choice of breads, cheese, meat, salid, fruit, cereals, local pastries and Turkish delight. A hot choice was also available with cook to order omelettes and eggs. The Staff again were first class, always smartly presented, polite and attentive.
The Hotel Is literally in the centre of Girne (Kyrenia) and is only a 5-8 minute walk from the Castle and Harbour. We found this to be ideal as we were B&B and this was our first visit to Northern Cyprus.
People in past reviews have mentioned excessive noise from events at the Hotel and To be honest their was event on the Friday night of our stay that was quite loud but did'nt feel it was excessive (was still going passed midnight).
The Pool is on the roof of the Hotel and the water was cold, we had a couple of days of strong winds so the sun shades had to be literally lashed down. Waiter service and a roof top bar are available. It was never busy and we did come away with a tan.
I dont think there would be any of the rooms with a good view ( See our photographs). If you book a room or suite at the front of the Hotel you'll end up looking at a petrol station and car wash. Someone please prove me wrong as inside the Hotel is immaculate.
The Gym and Spa centre is also on the roof / 4th floor. The Gym was first class probably one of the best I have used in a hotel it was clean and had plenty of equipment. The Gym staff were polite and efficient and only to willing to show us how to use certain pieces of equipment.
My wife used the spa (jacuzzi & sauna) and said it was spotless. The Spa treatments available were extensive and to be perfectly honest no dearer than some of the Hotels we have stayed at in Egypt.
My Wife and I (both from a forces background) got the distinct feeling of a town with the 'Gibraltar' Vibe to it from the seventies. Everyone we spoke to spoke English (better than my Turkish) and they drive on the same side of the road as us, it was just a chilled out great little town to walk around both at nignt and during the day.
There are plenty of Bars Cafe's and restaurants to eat and drink at. You can go cheap at the kebab shops nearest to the Hotel move upwards crossing the road on the main street there are 5 or 6 bars in a row. The Bars and Restaurants down by the Harbour are probably the most expensive ( But not excessively) to be honest what a way to eat and socialise.
Would I recommend this Hotel, HELL YES!!!
Would I recommend Northern Cyprus HELL YES!!! (but before mass tourism arrives).
The Hotel is lovely but expensive to eat and drink at, not that it would prevent us from returning.
All in all a great Hotel and a great Holiday.
Room Tip: Dont go for a room at the front of the Hotel overlooks a Petrol station and car wash
