This is a one star hotel, according to the tourist authority, and you should not expect too much.
The British Hotel's view of the world-class harbour is partly blocked by the White Pearl Hotel.
The British Hotel has been refurbished in a cheap and cheerful style. My bed was comfortable although the sheets and pillowcases seemed slightly stained. The shower worked but seemed rather old. The air conditioning worked. I used a spray to kill off some insects. The small TV did not work.
Breakfast was good, although the service varied in friendliness. In the late afternoon, when I asked if I could have a cup of coffee, I was told I could make my own in my room.
When I came to pay my bill, I offered to pay the price that was quoted at reception in Turkish Liras, but was told that that price had gone up. There are better hotels in Kyrenia.
The town of Kyrenia has changed for the worse since the 1970s. Gone are the lovely surrounding fields and country lanes, to be replaced by endless block of flats, many of them empty.
Kyrenia still has some of the magic you would expect to find in an old Mediterranean harbour town. Some of the friendliness has vanished, but you can still find helpful people.
According to a newspaper report, only 40% of the population of North Cyprus is still made up of Turkish Cypriots. You can still see the tanks and soldiers carrying what look like sub-machine guns.
