“Basic place let down by total lack of sound insulation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2011

I stayed one night at Christoph Clomb on a work trip to Luxembourg. The location is pretty good if you arrive by train: an easy 10 minute walk from the railway station and 5 minutes to a main avenue where all the buses stop. It seems quite safe, and there are quite a few restaurants and shops around. The welcome was friendly, and the room clean and spacious. The decor is not what I would describe as a delight; it's very basic, almost dorm-like, and quite dated. I had a twin room and the beds were quite narrow, but firm and fairly comfortable. Huge pillows; why do hotels think pillows must be the size of the planet? The tiny bathroom was pretty ugly, but the shower had plenty of hot water and good pressure, which is not alwas a given. I did expect all this, just like I expected not to find any of the travel necessities you find in better places - you only get a bar soap and a sachet of shower gel - so I took everything I needed with me. But what really let this hotel down in my estimation was the complete lack of sound insulation. I heard people talking in the corridors and next door, my neighbour's taking a shower sounded like they had invaded my own bathroom, ther were what sounded like cleaning noises even late at night, etc... So if you are either a heavy sleeper not bothered by noise, or find earplugs comfortable (I don't) then this is a good, no-frills place to stay one or two nights. I still couldn't help feeling the price was a rip-off, I know Luxembourg is not cheap but still, for me this hotel in a below 100 euro price bracket would be "worth it". At 120 euros, not so.

“Good for the money, considering Luxembourg rates”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

As mentioned in the tile, it's good for your money considering you're in Luxembourg and this hotel is just a 15 mins walk away from the city center.
Rooms are ok, decoration is just average, and they certainly don't deserve a 4 star rating, I'd give them a 2 stars.
Service is alright, nothing special. No restaurant inside the hotel, no room service, no Internet access unless you pay for it (4 euro per day, which is NOT cheap). Breakfast is frugal. No toothpaste provided.
Go there if you don't want to blow up the budget but still be in a clean and decent place, and in a good location near the train station and the city center. Don't go for a special occasion.

“Affordable and in good location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

The hotel is ideally located within a walking distance from the train station and close to the city centre. The hotel has great prepaid deals if you book in advance ( about 50% discount).
The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful, they spoke English very well.
The room was a reasonable size, with Tv, phone, mini bar, small fridge and the bathroom with a shower. The hotel offers a wifi connection for a fee ( 4Euros/ 24 hours)
You may find it a bit noisy as the hotel rooms face the main street.
The breakfast was rich; bread rolls, croissants, cheese, yoghourt and cereals, fresh fruit, fruit juice tea and coffee.
If you're not leaving the city in the morning you can leave your luggage at the reception free of charge.
I had a pleasant stay at this hotel and would recommend it to others.

“good location, but a bit expensive for what you get”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 April 2010

I found it hard to find a decent hotel in Luxembourg within my budget, but after a bit of playing around found a good weekend rate at the Colomb and in combination with the much higher Monday night rate, ended up paying 290 euros for 4 nights (AU $105 per night) plus 4 euros a night for wireless internet - 75 euros a night in all. For this trip my budget has been 65 euros a night and I have had much better value in other places in Europe - it was not worth the premium.

The hotel is close to the train station - a 7 minute walk up the main drag and you'll find the hotel in a little square. It's another 10 minute walk up the main street to Constitution Square, right in the heart of the old city. So, its a very convenient location.

I had a room on the 4th floor (there is a small elevator); the room had 2 single beds with thick comfy mattresses and decent sized pillows for a change. There was a desk, TV and phone, mini-bar and small fridge, room safe (big enough for my laptop), wardrobe. The bathroom had a shower (grobe shower head, powerful and hot), sink and toilet - it was a decent size compared to some I have had over the past 2 months.

The room was missing things I have come to take as standard: there were no tissues, or writing paper and pen, for instance, so you need to have your own. There were some basic toiletries (shampoo in sachets, little soaps) but I preferred to use my own.

My main problem with the room was noise: my room faced over the street and the cars did not stop roaring up the road all night. In addition (maybe because it was the weekend) there were a lot of drunk-sounding people shouting and squabbling outside in the early hours of the morning; it was really noisy and I didn't get a lot of sleep.

Breakfast was basic but enough to get you going in the morning: bread rolls and some pastries, muesli and yoghurt, some cheese (soft, sliced) and some containers with what I think were meat pastes plus jams. Also orange juice. Tea and coffee are served at the table.

Reception staff were very friendly and helpful.

So, I thought it was an acceptable 2-star hotel - on hotels.com it is down as a 4 star but there is no way it meets that definition. I probably wouldn't recommend it to a friend unless they got a better deal than I did.

“Good hotel with good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2009

We stayed at the Atel Christophe Colomb for three nights. The location is close to the train station and within easy walking distance of the centre of the old town. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The rooms are quite small, as is usual, and the furnishings a bit basic for the class of hotel. A double bed is made by just moving the night table and pushing two singles together. The breakfast buffet is fine. High speed internet was not free but the charge was quite reasonable compared to some places. There are bars and cafes close by and, although not the best area, it seems to be very safe - as was all of Luxembourg.
