As others have said, this is probably the most convenient hotel if you arrive in Luxembourg by train. This is a reasonably priced hotel in a very expensive city. My room was at the back and was average size by European standards although the bathroom was truly enormous! The back rooms face onto a central lift/stair well so there’s not a lot to see but at last it’s quiet. Restaurant food was tasty but mostly meat based though no problem if you are vegetarian as I am as the friendly chef was happy to rustle up alternatives such as a huge mushroom omelette: probably the best I’ve ever tasted. The local wine is also very palatable as one would expect with a nice red a pleasant surprise.
The centre is within about 10mins walk (but there’s lots of public transport). It’s worth aiming for the courtyard of the Luxembourg City History Museum as there is an external lift (easy to miss the entrance to this which is opposite the giant size coloured vases) which takes you down through the cliff-face to the Grund area with it’s cafes and bars. I found Luxembourg city absolutely fascinating. I’ve been to other similar places like Monaco and Andorra but the people here seem very relaxed and charming and don’t display their wealth – even given the fact that there are so many high-end shops in the centre like Cartier etc. A few words in Luxembourgish (taken from the guidebook) and the extra effort will make you very popular. Moien - hello; addi - goodbye.
I got to Luxembourg by train via London St Pancras, changing at Brussels. Your Eurostar ticket allows free travel anywhere in Belgium within 24 hours, so book to Arlon which is on the Belgium/Luxembourg border. An extra £10 takes you to Luxembourg. The journey from Brussels to Luxembourg by train takes 3 hours and there’s some very pretty river valley scenery en route.
During my stay, I travelled north from Luxembourg one afternoon to Clervaux . This takes about 1 hour through charming rolling countryside. I wanted to visit the Unesco ‘Family of Man’ exhibition in the Chateau but, after about a 20 minute walk from the station, found the exhibition is closed for renovation until 2013. So check with tourist information before you visit. It’s still worth visiting though as there is fascinating Battle of the Ardennes Museum.
