A lovely find in Luxembourg. Was attracted by the reasonable price. Would return if the price stayed the same. Great room, location.

Small hotel. Great service. Very friendly, helpful staff. Loaned us bikes for the day. Room overlooked main square, but quiet at night. Can walk everywhere. Wireless Internet access included. Very comfortable, modern room with air conditioning. Appears to be newly renovated. A substantial European buffet breakfast was included. Only downside was parking - 8 Euro a day in a private secure garage offsite, two or three blocks away. But you don't need your car anyway. We would definitely come back here.
I can very much relate to another review on this site: very clean rooms, and the breakfast is good. But the atmosphere is rather unfriendly or cold. Even a simple question about what kind of tea I could choose, seemed to be very difficult. It made me feel like I was a very difficult guest, and it didn't make me feel welcome at all. I was happy to leave. (That was also due to the festivities (loud music) on the Marketplace, accidently in the same weekend we were there; that made it impossible to sleep until after midnight - so we left one day sooner than planned)
We spent a three-day weekend at this hotel, which is located in the beautiful market square.
Pros:
- The price was excellent, and it included breakfast.
- The recently renovated rooms are truly lovely
- The air conditioning actually conditions the air. It's the first European hotel in which I've stayed that has AC on par with an American Holiday Inn.
- Everything is immaculately clean; something I would expect in a hotel across a small river from Germany.
- The breakfast is quite generous, with excellent coffee, wonderful breads, and ample meats, cheeses, and condiments.
Cons:
- Cripes, do these people have a crappy attitude! From the moment we checked in, the proprietor and his wife acted as if our every request (for another pillow, for the WiFi code, the location of the breakfast room) was a huge imposition. That demeanor extends to their kids, who hang out at the front desk and sometimes fill in.
- WiFi strength is spotty at best. One minute reception is excellent, the next, we can't connect. (And the router was outside of our room.)
Bottom Line: Would I stay there again? Probably not. I'd prefer to spend my discretionary income on a place that appreciates my business, not one that seems to think that THEY are doing ME a favor by granting me the great privilege of spending my hard-earned money on them.
We stayed 2 nights at the Hostellerie de la Basilique at the end of October 2005. We paid the half board rate so we ate in the restaurant both nights. The meal were fabulous and included local game as it was the traditional hunting season in Luxembourg. We are not realy sure what we ate as the English spoken was not the best but it sure tasted great.
The hotel is situated on a lovely square next to the abbey and close to the most of the shops. Echternach (and Luxembourg) is a nice place to visit and it was a pleasant time of year with the colour of the trees and lovely views.
Definately a good hotel and place to stay.
