This is a hotel that has several positive aspects that unfortunately are overwhelmed by a couple of negatives that, to me, make this a hotel I would not recommend to anyone except perhaps during the off season. Those two negatives are that there is but one bathroom shared among 12 hotel rooms. It's a nice bathroom, but when you have upwards of 25 guests sharing one toilet and one shower, you are going to have to make sacrifices of privacy and convenience of using a bathroom when you want to. To me, this is a fatal flaw of this hotel because it's obviously been recently renovated, and installing more bathrooms must be prohibitively expensive. Also, the hotel is exceptionally noisy for two reasons: 1) it sits right on the river, which is nice, but it also sits on the main road through Vianden and being at the lowest elevation, cars going in both directions are having to push the accelerator to climb, and in Vianden's tight streets, this means a lot of automobile and motorcycle noise from outside. 2) all three floors are connected by a central staircase and semi-circular landings that have all hard surfaces, and the reverb from the kitchen downstairs, any voices in the hall and footsteps is atrocious. The owners could really use with an effort to do noise abatement inside the hotel. A minor negative is that there is no Internet availability.
Now for the positives. The family room consisted of an approximately queen-sized bed and twin size bunkbed, sleeping a family of four just fine. There was one thin wardrobe and a few drawers and a large thin (but not flat screen) TV. For English speakers, I believe the only English-language channel was a BBC news channel. The bedroom and bathrooms had recently been renovated and had some fairly new mid-grade furnishings. Vianden itself was lovely and the hotel's location along the Our River is ideal. The restaurant appeared to have a seating area with one of the best views of the river and castle in the area, but we didn't eat there. The breakfast that comes with the room is served in an entry parlor at the bar/reception area and consisted of cold cuts, cheese, boiled eggs, cereal, fruit cocktail, yogurt, toast, coffee and tea. To me, the €120 per night rate did not seem much of a value, though it appears to be what the market will bear as the hotel was close to being sold out. I would recommend staying at this hotel only during the offseason, when the bathroom and noise issues would be less a problem, or to families that must stay in one room, as there are few choices for family accommodations in Vianden.
