“Excellent value for money - great owner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2010

Good position with view of the sea - if you ask. Wi-Fi is standard which is useful. Basic hotel but the owner – Aarge (sp?) is exceptional and went out of his way to help. He arranged for one of his hire cars to be waiting for us at the airport – and it was a very good price too. His past experience includes fishing, politics, business etc – so he was a mine of information about the Faroes, and has an excellent sense of humour too. Very good value for money and fully recommended. You must eat at the sushi restaurant Etika - just a few minutes walk from the hotel - amazing experience.

Faroes is breathtaking scenery and there are some fabulous walks - but you need a car to apprecaite the islands.

“A simple bed-and-breakfast”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

This is not more than a bed-and-breakfast. The rooms facing the sea are very loud, due to street noise. All rooms are very loud if your neighbour is in. Paper walls. The location is still walking distance to the center, but much farther out than Hotels Hafnia or Torshaven. The correct price in most other places would be around € 30 instead of € 100+. If you look for the best hotel in town, go to the Hotel Torshaven which is totally central, has a restaurant and terrace bar and seems completely newly refurbished in a halfway pleasant scandinavian design style. The other hotels (Hafnia and Föröyar) are run down. Faroer are beautiful islands, but if you have a taste for good hotels do not stay overnight.

“Affordable, acceptable alternative to 4-star rip offs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

Everything in the Faroes is expensive but this hotel is a perfectly adequate "budget" (£100 a night!) alternative to paying £200 a night at the Forayar (and no large coach parties!). It is right on teh sea, ask for a front room for a sea view and (it seemed) a bigger room. The style is minimalist - think a French Ibis hotel, furnished by Ikea, but the beds are reasonably comfy, the shower is hot and powerful, and the whole place is clean and welcoming. Breakfast is continental style, no hot food or fish, but plentiful and appetising. All the restaurants in Torshavn are within 10 minutes walk (see my reviews)

The staff were excellent - particularly Tomas, who went out of his way to help us book a trip to Mykines (an essential part of your holiday - to see 50,000 puffins close up!) when all the ferries and helicopters were fully booked.

Car hire from the hotel is wonderfully relaxed - we had booked one by email, but given no deposit or credit card, yet we were simply handed the key to a Ford Ka, told it was fully insured, and asked to return it with a full tank in 10 days time!

There is a PC which guests can use free.

Deal with the hotel direct, by email, and you may get a better deal than the website - I got DKK 850 a night for 11 nights (rack 950) and the car for 300 a day (rack 450).

“Clean, laid back, great value.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

We stayed at the Streym for three days in June. The room was clean and functional, and had internet access. When we first saw the room we had a bit of a chuckle because the furniture reminded us of IKEA! Speaking of IKEA, an excellent Scandinavian-style breakfast was also included, which was ample enough to get you set for the day ahead.

We felt the location was perfect: Step outside, turn right and downtown Torshavn was just 5-10 minutes away. Step outside, start driving north and you were on the ring road where the first right was the highway out of town. Pretty hard to get lost. Actually pretty hard to get lost anywhere in the Faroe Islands where water is never far away.

Not an issue for us but we were on the third floor and had to lug our suitcases up and down since there were no elevators. Also, the restaurant is only open for breakfast. There are some good places not far from the hotel but if it's pouring rain then that may not be a fun walk.

The hotel and staff were very laid back. I was astonished when I rented a car from them as to how easy and hassle-free it was. They have excellent prices available to hotel guests only. It was much cheaper than commercial companies. No extra insurance up sells or anything like that. They also suggested I keep track of toll tunnels and pay them when I turned the car in, instead of paying for them on the road as it was much cheaper. A great bargain!

The Faroes are still a well-kept secret, but it won't be for long. Get there while you can before everyone figures out it is such a beautiful and friendly place! As for the Streym, it was the perfect spot for our stay in Torshavn.

“Harbour views and close to town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

I stayed at Hotel Streym recently as part of a wider trip including the Faero Islands, Greenland and Denmark. The property is close to central Torshavn on Yviri vio Strond - essentially an esplanade on the harbour close to both Fort Skansin and the ferry to Klasvik and Streymoy. The rooms are sizeable and new (the property is pretty recent) and the proprieters helpful and friendly. I agree with another contributor that having to lug heavy cases up three floors is tough so maybe ask for the first or second floors. My only other minor criticism is that the restaurant is only open for breakfast. Ordinarily this isn't a problem but remember it rains a lot in the Faero islands and its quite a walk in the driving rain to a suitable eating place in town which is a good few minutes away.
