“Great choice but don't be sold on the Japanese tub.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

I stayed in the penthouse with my family for 3 nights over New Year and we were delighted with the place and its great location. There is a lot of building work going on at the moment and will probably continue for the next 4 months, It didn't cause us too much bother but It might be worth considering. The only other thing worth considering is the Japanese tub, the owners use this as a selling point but really its just a solution to having a lack of height for a shower and if you're not particularly agile you might have a few issues getting in and out of it.

“Good value if you are careful what apartment to reserve”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

These apartments in "Home Luxury Apartments" at the website http://this.is/home/ are now actually managed by Apartment K (see their separate listing on TripAdvisor). We booked a studio in this building on Skolastraeti 1 in the summer of 2011 because the website at http://this.is/home said each apartment had its own private parking space and "every expected luxury amenity including phone, internet, Bose wave CD/radio and fine wines." Very little of this was actually the case. The building had garbage strewn around the stairs and at the entry, and in the flower pots attached to the railing outside the landing there was dirt and cigarette butts instead of flowers. In the apartment, the phone never worked, even though we told management about it and they promised to fix it (a problem other guests had based on the reviews). There were certainly no wines provided (fine or otherwise), and in fact there were no luxury amenities at all. The place looked like it had not been renovated for many years. The molding was coming off, the furniture was old and tired looking, and the bed was on the floor. The tiny kitchen was dinky and almost useless. The top of the freezer was stuck and looked like it had been for years. But the worst part of this stay was that the apartment building was in the middle of a construction site that apparently had been operating for at least the past eight months. I could barely hear what the woman was telling me when she checked us into the apartment since the jackhammer was banging away a few feet from the apartment window. To make matters worse, we were told initially that since the construction people had taken over two of the four parking spots (they even put a chain link fence around the front of the building to house their large construction equipment which sat outside the building), we would not be guaranteed the "private parking spot" that the website promised. After getting the owner involved, we were moved to one of Apartment K's other apartments (see note above) and that was a MUCH better, renovated apartment one block away, although the phone in that apartment also never worked, and the street noise was incredibly loud all night, as the other reviewers have said. The owner of Apartment K was very accomodating when I got him involved, and he did correct the problem with our original apartment promptly, so I do think their operation is worth using. The one accurate aspect of the website marketing for the apartment on Skolastraeti 1 was that it is extremely centrally located. Other than the perfect location, do not expect a luxury apartment rental at this building at this point in time. Maybe many years ago it was in great shape, but as of mid-2011, this building was not the luxurious rental that the website promises. The other Apartment K apartment a block away was renovated more recently and had a lovely outdoor terrace with a great view of the water. The night noise from people on the streets outside even at 2-3 AM (which we heard even from the 3rd floor apartment) was surprisingly loud, although that didn't bother us too much as we are accustomed to city noise. I would recommend using Apartment K for their other apartments (other than Skolastraeti 1), but you will want to be very clear about what apartment you are reserving, its condition, etc. If you get one of their other apartments on the nearby streets (such as Laekjargata or Hvertfisgata streets) or nearby, and confirm they were renovated recently, you will get a good value.

“Nice Apartment but Could Be Much Better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2011

I stayed here for three nights in May 2011. I booked through my Visa travel agent and received a confirmation email from the manager. I emailed the manager a few weeks before my check-in to confirm and they responded promptly. I was dropped off in front of the apartment in the slushy rain with snow on the ground and was confused as to how to get into the apartment. There's no reception in the building, no phone number on the sign and there were absolutely no check-in instructions on any of my emails or on the website. I can't remember how I managed to find a phone number but I called it and they told me to call a different number, one for a different rental apartment building run by the same owners. After I finally contacted someone he said he would be there in twenty minutes as he was busy checking in other people at the building he was at.

The apartment itself was fine for a single person or a couple. The kitchen was sparsely equipped and you are expected to wash your own dishes before check-out or they will charge you. The wireless internet did not work. The bathroom was one of the better ones I had seen up to this point on my trip through Europe. The apartment is in a fantastic location. The mattress was comfortable and again one of the better ones I had through six countries.

The day after I arrived they started doing a massive demolition of the building right behind the apartment so it was noisy there during the day but I wasn't there much during the day.

My friend arrived the next day and stayed in a different apartment around the back of the house. She had the same confusing, non-existent check-in procedure as I did. We wondered how people without world-band data phones check in to this apartment!

These apartments are in such a great location and are very nice compared to lots of other rental apartments I have stayed at. They could be so much better with a small amount of maid service like garbage removal and dish washing and better management.

“Icelandic robbers”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

Although we have received a confirmation of the booking, there were no rooms for us. The hotel had booked us into another appartment - out of the centre, 2 classes below the one we booked originally. And they charged on my card original price 436 eur while the real price of the appartment was 290 eur!!!!! After very hot conversation I was promised refunding of the excessive amount plus discount 13 eur for the taxi to the city centrer. This practice becomes very common in Reykjavik. Services in Iceland are somewhere on level of 20 years ago in Central Europe.

Room Tip: Don't try Guesthouse Ísafold - the experience was even worse

“Some lovely experiences”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2011

We spent 4 days : Did the Golden Circle tour in a rented car, ate some lovely seafood in Reykjavik, walked up Eldfell in Heimaey and chilled out for a morning in the Blue Lagoon, Overall a very interesting trip. People were friendly and good humoured. Transport/ tourist infrastucture was excellant.
The appartment was comfortable. A bit small ( as a six person appartment , we were five) It would benefit from a microwave and some extra crockery and a good spring clean.. The hot tub/shower was not user friendly...it was tricky to get into, took an age to fill and only a hand held shower head
The rep was helpful.
Liked the location best and the loud revellers, street smokers from nearby bars least
