Three of us had booked the Bolholt apartments for four nights in December 2009, upon arrival the front desk was empty but a key had been left on reception with a note saying to let ourselves in. We found our room but discovered that there was only one double bed (we had booked a triple room). While my friend went to try and call the manager we had a look around the room, it was very basic with just a double bed, chair and small kitchenette but had a lovely view of the Bay and Esja Mountain. The manager had given my friend the keycode to the safe and told her which room we should be in so we picked up all our things and went in search of the other room.
Our new room unfortunately didnt have such a nice view as the first but at least it was larger and we had an extra sofa bed. The room also had a wardrobe, a dining table, chairs and a TV. Again the room was very sparse, (the website photos make the place look basic but in reality it was bare minimum!) the decor was a bit tired, and water came up through the drain in the bathroom everytime the sink was emptied! the kitchenette wasnt particularly clean and there were no towels left for us but luckily we stumbled upon the laundry cupboard where we found everything we needed.
On the plus side the rooms were warm, there was plenty of hot water and the beds comfortable. Having a kitchenette (microwave, hob, toaster, kettle & fridge) was really handy, Bread, cheese, ham, butter and jam are delivered every other day which sorted us for breakfast before we went out sightseeing. The apartments are located in a very quiet area, there is a petrol station just in front of the block and also a small supermarket a couple of minutes walk from the apartments so we stocked up on food to try and save ourselves a bit of money when we were out and about in Reykjavik.
The apartments are about a 25 minute walk into the centre of Reykjavik however after nearly freezing to death/taking a few wrong turns/slipping on the snow covered pavements walking into town on the first night we resorted to taxis for the rest of our stay!!
Overall the Bolholt apartments were clean, warm and comfortable but a bit tired and very basic, definitely not the place to stay if youre looking for a romantic break. The apartments are one of the pick up/drop off points for the airport & tour buses which was very handy but were a little too far away from the action for my liking, We didnt see any staff the entire time we were there which was shame as we would have liked some advice on local places to go, directions etc
I wasnt particularly impressed with Bolholt but have stayed in worse places. If youre looking for cheap and (fairly) cheerful and dont mind a bit of a walk then this is the place for you. I'm not sure I would stay here again, I'd much prefer to spend a little bit extra for somewhere slightly less basic and a bit closer to the centre.
