“Basic, budget accomodation and a bit of a trek into central Reykjavik”

Three of us had booked the Bolholt apartments for four nights in December 2009, upon arrival the front desk was empty but a key had been left on reception with a note saying to let ourselves in. We found our room but discovered that there was only one double bed (we had booked a triple room). While my friend went to try and call the manager we had a look around the room, it was very basic with just a double bed, chair and small kitchenette but had a lovely view of the Bay and Esja Mountain. The manager had given my friend the keycode to the safe and told her which room we should be in so we picked up all our things and went in search of the other room.

Our new room unfortunately didnt have such a nice view as the first but at least it was larger and we had an extra sofa bed. The room also had a wardrobe, a dining table, chairs and a TV. Again the room was very sparse, (the website photos make the place look basic but in reality it was bare minimum!) the decor was a bit tired, and water came up through the drain in the bathroom everytime the sink was emptied! the kitchenette wasnt particularly clean and there were no towels left for us but luckily we stumbled upon the laundry cupboard where we found everything we needed.

On the plus side the rooms were warm, there was plenty of hot water and the beds comfortable. Having a kitchenette (microwave, hob, toaster, kettle & fridge) was really handy, Bread, cheese, ham, butter and jam are delivered every other day which sorted us for breakfast before we went out sightseeing. The apartments are located in a very quiet area, there is a petrol station just in front of the block and also a small supermarket a couple of minutes walk from the apartments so we stocked up on food to try and save ourselves a bit of money when we were out and about in Reykjavik.

The apartments are about a 25 minute walk into the centre of Reykjavik however after nearly freezing to death/taking a few wrong turns/slipping on the snow covered pavements walking into town on the first night we resorted to taxis for the rest of our stay!!

Overall the Bolholt apartments were clean, warm and comfortable but a bit tired and very basic, definitely not the place to stay if youre looking for a romantic break. The apartments are one of the pick up/drop off points for the airport & tour buses which was very handy but were a little too far away from the action for my liking, We didnt see any staff the entire time we were there which was shame as we would have liked some advice on local places to go, directions etc

I wasnt particularly impressed with Bolholt but have stayed in worse places. If youre looking for cheap and (fairly) cheerful and dont mind a bit of a walk then this is the place for you. I'm not sure I would stay here again, I'd much prefer to spend a little bit extra for somewhere slightly less basic and a bit closer to the centre.

“We were sent to another location in the city.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2010

We booked a room at Boholt but was sent to Reykjavik 101 Appartments (same owner) upon arrival. Hard to complain and argue @2am after a long flight. The Bolt appartments were used by a large group.

No message from the management in advance. (phone & email was available)

The new appartment was ok, but was not in the pick-up lists for tours, flybus etc.

“Wonderful Base Hotel for our Iceland Adventure”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2010

We arrived a little bit early but were greeted by the manager who told us our room would be ready in about 30 minutes. We parked the car right out front (plenty of parking) and walked about 10 minutes into town to have lunch.
When we came back the manager was gone but the cleaning staff was able to get our key to the room. It was roomy and nice looking - very Ikea. Big windows that looked out to the main street. i was worried about noise but there wasn't a problem as the apartments are very quiet both inside and out. However, the drapes did not block out all the daylight so be more prepared than we were and bring an eye mask.
That night we walked back into town for the pub crawl and had so much fun. The city seems very safe and we weren't worried at all about walking back to the hotel at 3:30 AM. Something we would never do in Chicago.
The next morning I noticed we didn't have enough towels and that the previous guests towels had been left behind so I took them to the laundry room and picked up some fresh ones. Came back to the room had a shower and made some breakfast from the food provided in the fridge. It was a nice perk. There was bread, jelly, cheese and ham. We supplemented it with peanut butter and bagels. The kitchen is pretty well stocked and you could cook meals if you wanted to. No freezer though.
We used the free wifi daily and enjoyed watching movies on TV.
The location is really convenient for traveling because you're so close to the main routes and can get to where you need to go quickly by car. It's also really nice being close to town and all the fun things to do and see there by walking.
Check out was easy as well. We locked the door to the room and dropped the keys in the mail box and then out we went!

“Good value, nice location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2010

This hotel is better than it sounds in some of the reviews. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. It's kind of a strange hotel just because it is located on the fourth floor of what I think is an office building. We didn't have any issues checking in, and did see several staff around the week we were there. It is very good if you like privacy, as we didn't see too many of the other guests. The room was very quiet.

There is a kitchenette with microwave, small fridge, sink, toaster, plates, everything you could ask for really. The free breakfast means they stock your kitchenette with bread, butter, jelly, cereals, milk, and juice (enough for the week we were there). It was actually nice, we bought some extra stuff from the grocery store and only went out for dinners.

In my opinion, the location can't be beat. It's quiet, yet close to the city center. There is a gas station across the street, a supermarket down the block. I enjoyed some of the shops they have right around the area on the way to city center. We popped into a shop down the block with some amazing handmade woodwork and jewelry. We also walked to Kringlan mall one day. If you happen to rent a car, skip the 10-11/Bonus markets and go to the market on the first floor of Kringlan. They have more selection of food, cheap good quality Italian olive oils, chocolate, many things the markets in city center did not have. I would not recommend it if you are walking, though, as the walk is pretty far, and it would be difficult to carry groceries all that way.

The Nordica is across the street, so many tour guides will be familiar with your location. There is plenty of parking if you happen to rent a car.

One of the reviewers complained about towels. We had clean towels the whole time, but there is also a room in the back with clean towels, extra pillows, etc. I got the feeling that if you wanted to, you could just get some from there.

Only cons are the room could have been cleaner, and the king bed was actually two twins pushed together. I know this is the standard for most hostels, and it was fine for us, but make sure that is OK with you if you are looking for more of a romantic getaway.

Also, one of the staff was very helpful to us on our last day. I was a little concerned with how late our bus was picking us up (I thought I read the directions wrong). He knew the driver at re.is and called him on his cell phone to see why he was so late. A small gesture, but very reassuring when he let us know the guy was just late and we were in the right place.

I loved Iceland and plan to come back. I would definitely stay here again.
