I stayed here in February and chose this hotel based on the reviews from Trip Advisor. I was allocated a single room in the 'old' part of the hotel as it was just me.
I checked in very easily and throughout my stay all the hotel staff were incredibly polite, helpful and pleasant.
Bad points:
- When getting to my room, there were a lot of paint pots and random plastic buckets outside one of the doors, this looked really shabby and they were there the following day as well so first impressions weren't good
- My room was very small, smaller than a lot of Travelodges
- The bed only had one (lumpy) pillow and only had one main bath towel - if you wanted to wash your hair, it would be difficult!
- My toilet wouldn't stop flushing so I had to push the button in a second time to stop it from making a lot of noise
- The main shower head had a lot of mould on it and the smaller one had a lot of limescale so the water went in all directions.
Good points:
- Room was very quiet, I couldn't hear a thing at night
- Despite the mould on the shower head, the room was very clean and always tidied each day
- There was free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel with a pretty good upload and download speed (tip: You DON'T have to fill out the 'questionnaire' ever time you connect, just hit the 'continue' button, then go to whatever URL you want....)
- There were a number of TV channels in English, BBC1 and BBC2 SCotland, ITV, ITV2, ITV4 - It was quite nice to watch some TV in the evenings and nice to watch things in my native language
- The hotel was very conveniently placed for a number of activites
Here's where it got a bit weird as I was due to check out after 4 days. I got to the airport, only to find that my flight to Heathrow had been cancelled due to the snow. I phoned up the hotel straight away and they easily booked me into a double room. I was assigned a room on the 4th floor, rather than the 2nd and the difference was absolutely amazing - the double room was much bigger, lovely double bed with 2 pillows, much more comfy, lovely flat screen TV with a much nicer and more modern bathroom.
Had I known the difference in rooms, I would have upgraded straight away.
If I had just had my single room, then my reccomendation would have been to only expect the VERY basics and if all you're looking for is somewhere quiet with a lock on the door, then use this hotel due to its location, however not to bother if you want a little bit of luxury. However, now my reccomendation would be to book this hotel but ask for a DOUBLE room, even if you're travelling on your own and make sure it's in the new part of the hotel, not the old part.
The staff are fantastic and the location is excellent.
I'd reccomend getting the flybus from the airport - 4,500 isk for a return journey and it takes about an hour (with a change at the main terminal - the drivers are very helpful and tell you exactly where to go). The hotel staff can book your return journey and were very helpful on both times we had to book a return journey by mini bus. Taxis are VERY expensive and it's a 45 minute plus journey to the hotel so I wouldn't use them unless you're very rich!
Cafe Paris was fantatsic to go for dinner and they had two healthy options so if you're wanting to watch calories, it's a good place to go. The fish buffet (directly in front of the hotel) is also absolutely amazing with a massive buffet of different fish from cod to catfish - different and also quite healthy depending on what you choose.
Room Tip: Make sure you choose a double room on the modern side of the hotel - the difference between the '...
