“strong smell of fish”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We booked this hotel late in the day after a cancelled flight & got a reasonable rate.
The staff were very pleasant & efficient at check in.
On the way to our room we were suddenly aware of a strong smell of fish in the corridors & then realised that part of the hotel is built above the Geysir restaurant. On this basis alone I would not have spent more than the one night at this hotel, the smell was nauseating even if you like fish.
The room was a bit out of the way, we felt isolated in the rafters but we were relieved that the fish smell was not in the room. It was like an attic room, compact but cozy, we had a very comfortable night, the room served it's purpose.
However there were things that were substandard.
The room was dusty, there was a feeling the room had not been occupied for a while & had a sneaky suspicion the bedding was not fresh, it was not crisp & evidence of hairs. We wondered if cleaning had been overlooked after last occupants but the bathroom was immaculate, toiletries, tea & coffee had been replenished & no stale odours so felt reassured by that.
There was a ceiling light that had no lampshade, we noticed it had been abandoned on top of the wardrobe.
The laminate floor was heavily marked & some damage to the decor.
There was no safe facility in the room & the TV remote did not work properly which involved us scrabbling around at the back of the TV..
To be fair we did not bring any of this to the attention of the staff because at the time we were exhausted & after an afternoon of aggro we were only too relieved to have a bed to collapse into.

“Great position, service and breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We were transferred from the sister hotel for 1 night. Receptionists extremely helpful and spent time, rearranging some cancelled excursions. Room on top floor, was a upgrade for the upheaval. The room we had was af good standard, not stunning like the Thingholt hotel, but had a great dual aspect view over the square and restaurants which was very nice. Bathroom was fine, although the hot tap water smelt of sulpher as we did not want to risk washing our teeth. Breafast was taken at 8 ish and found it too be excellent choice, very wide choice. Became very busy at 9 and was glad we went when we did. Did not look around to see other facilities as were straight back to our expected hotel in the morning. Staff and situation make this a good choicem rooms fair but not very fancy.

Room Tip: Top floor facing mountains, dual aspect windows. Plasma tv and armchairs. Very quiet corridors.

“Great location, Decent rooms, Pleasant staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Stayed in the triple room over Thanksgiving 2011. The hotel was located on a small street, a block from the water. The location is perfect, bars, restaurants and shopping are literally steps away. Because the hotel is in a central location, there can be some street noise. We didn't really have this problem, because we were so exhausted from our daily trips, we were passed out fairly early and hard each night.

There is a cab station right outside the door, so there is never a wait if you need to leave the immediate area. If you rent a car, there are many places to park for a miminal fee. I don't think we paid more than $10 during our 4 day stay (Parking is free in that area between 6p-8a if I remember correctly).

The staff at the hotel was great. Very helpful with booking an excursion (Glacier walk/climb...do it!), contacting a company after a miscommunication, and any other questions or issues we had.

Our room was basic, nothing fancy at all, but it was clean. It had 3 twin beds, 2 large windows and a small shower bathroom. My only complaint was that the shower door didn't keep the water in; the whole bathroom floor got wet, so be careful. Imagine how it looks after 3 people are done in there.

There is a small waiting area and a petite bar/lounge that offers a daily happy hour special.

Food recommendations nearby: The Seafood Cellar, dinner, 2 min away; The Grey Kitty, breakfast, 5-10 min away; Caruso's, dinner, 5-10 min; The Viking Village, Viking restaurant, 15-20 min drive away in Hafnarfjordur.

Room Tip: Higher floor should help with noise if you are a light sleeper.

“Good location, comfortable place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We stayed 3 nights (weekdays) at this hotel in January 2012 (winter) and found the place (and beds) to be comfortable. Hotel is just beside the tourist information center, close to shops and restaurants. We did not have issues with street noise (hardly any) but the room door wasn't soundproof and we awoke from our sleep from noise generated from the corridor by people who returned to their rooms late in the night on our last night there. The hotel has a minibar (items chargeable) but reception was unable to give me a list of items (and their quantity) in the minibar - I had requested for it to check the minibar's "inventory". A computer terminal with free internet is available in the lobby.

“Wonderful staff - make sure you choose a double room though!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I stayed here in February and chose this hotel based on the reviews from Trip Advisor. I was allocated a single room in the 'old' part of the hotel as it was just me.

I checked in very easily and throughout my stay all the hotel staff were incredibly polite, helpful and pleasant.

Bad points:
- When getting to my room, there were a lot of paint pots and random plastic buckets outside one of the doors, this looked really shabby and they were there the following day as well so first impressions weren't good

- My room was very small, smaller than a lot of Travelodges

- The bed only had one (lumpy) pillow and only had one main bath towel - if you wanted to wash your hair, it would be difficult!

- My toilet wouldn't stop flushing so I had to push the button in a second time to stop it from making a lot of noise

- The main shower head had a lot of mould on it and the smaller one had a lot of limescale so the water went in all directions.

Good points:
- Room was very quiet, I couldn't hear a thing at night

- Despite the mould on the shower head, the room was very clean and always tidied each day

- There was free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel with a pretty good upload and download speed (tip: You DON'T have to fill out the 'questionnaire' ever time you connect, just hit the 'continue' button, then go to whatever URL you want....)

- There were a number of TV channels in English, BBC1 and BBC2 SCotland, ITV, ITV2, ITV4 - It was quite nice to watch some TV in the evenings and nice to watch things in my native language

- The hotel was very conveniently placed for a number of activites

Here's where it got a bit weird as I was due to check out after 4 days. I got to the airport, only to find that my flight to Heathrow had been cancelled due to the snow. I phoned up the hotel straight away and they easily booked me into a double room. I was assigned a room on the 4th floor, rather than the 2nd and the difference was absolutely amazing - the double room was much bigger, lovely double bed with 2 pillows, much more comfy, lovely flat screen TV with a much nicer and more modern bathroom.

Had I known the difference in rooms, I would have upgraded straight away.

If I had just had my single room, then my reccomendation would have been to only expect the VERY basics and if all you're looking for is somewhere quiet with a lock on the door, then use this hotel due to its location, however not to bother if you want a little bit of luxury. However, now my reccomendation would be to book this hotel but ask for a DOUBLE room, even if you're travelling on your own and make sure it's in the new part of the hotel, not the old part.

The staff are fantastic and the location is excellent.

I'd reccomend getting the flybus from the airport - 4,500 isk for a return journey and it takes about an hour (with a change at the main terminal - the drivers are very helpful and tell you exactly where to go). The hotel staff can book your return journey and were very helpful on both times we had to book a return journey by mini bus. Taxis are VERY expensive and it's a 45 minute plus journey to the hotel so I wouldn't use them unless you're very rich!

Cafe Paris was fantatsic to go for dinner and they had two healthy options so if you're wanting to watch calories, it's a good place to go. The fish buffet (directly in front of the hotel) is also absolutely amazing with a massive buffet of different fish from cod to catfish - different and also quite healthy depending on what you choose.

Room Tip: Make sure you choose a double room on the modern side of the hotel - the difference between the '...
