“Perfect for young or budget visitors to Iceland.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

Stayed here with my girlfriend (both 24) for 6 nights in Feb 2011, read some pretty bad reviews and was at first worried about what the room would be like.

However, the room was spacious, tidy and cleaned daily. Fridge worked fine, everything in the bathroom was fine, beds were OKAY. We had a nice big window to let in Iceland's minimal daylight. Went in February, managed to get 6 nights and flights for £325 with lastminute.com- and for this price it was an absolute steal compared to elsewhere in Reykjavik.

If you want a luxury hotel, don't stay here- but expect to pay a lot lot more for a room. But if you don't plan on spending time in your hotel room and simply want a bed for the night after enjoying all Reykjavik has to offer then I recommend this place purely for value for money.

Some of the reviews I've read on here are unfair... for the price you pay you shouldn't expect much- but if you are travelling budget and are a couple or dislike hostels (I hate them!) then this is ideal. Breakfast is rubbish though. Ham and a roll :/

Room Tip: Noticed there are basement rooms... probably best to avoid one of those.

“you pay for location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

I stayed there for 3 nights in November 2011. Need to mention that most of the reviews are correct. The hotel needs updating and proper refurbishment. The rooms are small, beds are narrow and some new & fresh bedding and towels will do. There was a TV in the room which I tried to watch but there was a problem with a remote control. No hair dryer :) I would not say that the hotel was not clean. It is just old. On the bright side, a man at the reception desk was really helpful and polite. Breakfast was pretty basic but I quite liked it. And the location is really good. Close to the hight street, information centre and cafes & restaurants. I would not go back to this hotel again but bear in mind that there is lots to do in Iceland and you would not spend a lot of time in the hotel room.

Room Tip: Nice location but the hotel is old

“The worst hotel we have ever visited”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

We chose this hotel because it was close to the center and it was not much expensive, but we found many things not working properly:
- rooms were dirty, walls had wide stains of damp, bathroom and shower were not cleaned well and some traces of previous guests were still present;
- hair dryer was not available in the room and you had to ask for it at the reception;
- the reception was often deserted, especially in the morning;
- breakfast was called "buffet", but often there were missing things: in the second morning only boiled eggs were available, 1 day there were no waffles, for 2 days no fruit, cheese often missing, dishes and cups sometimes were not clean;
- it was a problem to close the window in the room;
- last but not least, we found a message at the reception that sounds like this: "If you want you room quickly, pay 15 euros and you will have your room cleaned in 15 minutes".
The only positive point is the position but it does not justify 3* rating.

“It's an expensive flop house”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2011

This isn't a three star hotel it is a one star. The bedrooms are tiny and the walls paper thin. Every morning woken by neighbouring alarms and washing noises and talking. Breakfast is horrible, cheapest meat, orange squash and nasty liquid coffee flavoured drink machine. Bathrooms are nasty, no ventillation, no room to sit on toilet due to wall, hot water is very smelly due to sulphur, peeling mouldy tiles, flaking chrome bath rails, minute towels which are never changed. No chest of draws or storage in the room.

Staff were OK but the hotel is like a bad hostel, in fact the hostel round the corner looked lovely compared to the Met.

We spent all our time out of our rooms on the road or in the local bars because they were so horrible. Even the mini-bar was empty.

Would not stay there again even if it has a good location.

+1 the Seafood Baron as the best place to eat - lobster soup and a fish-kebab.

Room Tip: stay somewhere else - 2nd floor is very run down.

“horrible room service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 April 2011

I spent at Metropolitan 5 days...Room was small, no wardrobe, bed sheet wasn't changed when I came!! Bathroom was also small and little bit dirty (couple of hair in the bath). Room service visited my room after 4 days. Nobody changed towels even bin.

When I went away at the airport, staff forgot order bus (the day before) and when the bus arrived next day, it was wrong bus so instead of the airport i got to somewhere else. Fortunately one man helped me...

Plus is that hotel is near the downtown but I cant recommended!
