“Best view and best breakfast in Iceland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

I recently stayed at this hotel with my mom for three nights. Our room was located in the new dorm building and was facing East which allowed for stunning views of the fjord and town. The room had a nice kitchenette and huge closets, we could have easily stayed here for months (like the students of the boarding school who usually live here during off-season). The dorm-style came in really handy as there was so much space, and even two desks. The entire property was very clean, the staff very friendly, and the breakfast was delicious. Very attentive staff in the restaurant gave us time to enjoy our breakfast even close to 10:00 a.m. when they're closing. That's when we found the restaurant to be the least crowded. Sleep in, eat breakfast late, and avoid the bus groups who frequently stay here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor in the new building - great views and super quiet!

“A Great Bargain!”

My husband and I visited family in Iceland and decided to do a drive round the country. We were looking for something cheap and clean. We have never tried this type of accommodation except for when we camped 2 years ago. I am often not keen on shared baths/toilets but we wanted cheap so that's what we booked. We booked 3 Edda hotels (Skogar, Hofn & Akureyri) all at about £50 per room per night so can't complain.

We found this particular hotel to be a nice surprise! It was in a good location, clean rooms and the bathroom was just opposite our room. Had two toilets and two shower rooms and a very quiet floor so never had to wait to use the facilities. The reception was very nice and clean and receptionists were helpful. From the outside and the reception area, it looked more like a hotel than a school house! Breakfast at the hotel was good. We were happy with the choices.

The walk to the centre of town (5 mins downhill) was a delight with a lovely church just before you reach the bottom of the hill. The views are lovely. We were very lucky with the weather - it was sunny and bright blue skies so we got some amazing photos. A few places to eat in town. Iceland is generally expensive so we only had dinner out in a restaurant that offered a salad bar and also a la carte options. Not unreasonably priced. I think we paid about £30 for dinner with drinks. The coffee shop in town offers free internet so we spent some time there to catch up with civilization!

Akureyri was a breath of fresh air and very pretty. We'd definitely use Hotel Edda again.

“A lot missing for 19100ISK a night”

For basically 180$ cad a night, I'd expect a few basics. Tea kettle in the room? Nope. Hot water available 24 hours a day? Not this stay. How about Internet? Not available during my stay. Big curtains to keep the 24/7 sun out of the room? Falls short.

The service was nice and friendly, but too much is missing at what I think are outrageous prices.

“Slightly above-average Edda”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2010

Not much to say about this one. It's apparently Iceland's largest Edda hotel (Edda=school buildings used as hotels during the summer). You've got the ususal hostel-meets-barracks ambience, but this one is in a good location - peaceful, close to the town centre and next to the world's most northerly botanical gardens -, staff were friendly, and there was nothing to complain about the rooms. You should be able to stomach screaming school groups for breakfast though.

“A great base for the North”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2010

I turned up in Akureyri at the height of the tourist season, with no accommodation booking, but I'd heard that the Edda Hotel, based in a school during the summer holidays, had over 200 beds. It was almost Midnight when I checked in, and I wasn't the only person. There were four others checking in ahead of me. I asked for three nights, which entitled me to one free breakfast. While there was no limit on what you could eat for breakfast, the choice was a lot less than at my previous Edda, in Isafjordur. Anyway, I found it was necessary to extend my stay by another two nights, with the result that my final night was free! However, when I tried to extend by another two nights, I was told that everything was fully booked for the weekend, and sadly I had to look elsewhere. The staff were always pleasant, friendly and helpful. The place was spacious and my single room was larger than I expected it would be. Oddly enough, they don't seem to use the surrounding grounds for camping, which seemed a waste, especially when the town campsite is very crowded and the only other campsite is a bit of a hike out of town. I noticed that most people going to and from town walked along roads, but there was a lovely winding path on a wooded slope that virtually linked the Edda with the tourist office, and I never once met anyone else using this path.
