My husband and I visited family in Iceland and decided to do a drive round the country. We were looking for something cheap and clean. We have never tried this type of accommodation except for when we camped 2 years ago. I am often not keen on shared baths/toilets but we wanted cheap so that's what we booked. We booked 3 Edda hotels (Skogar, Hofn & Akureyri) all at about £50 per room per night so can't complain.
We found this particular hotel to be a nice surprise! It was in a good location, clean rooms and the bathroom was just opposite our room. Had two toilets and two shower rooms and a very quiet floor so never had to wait to use the facilities. The reception was very nice and clean and receptionists were helpful. From the outside and the reception area, it looked more like a hotel than a school house! Breakfast at the hotel was good. We were happy with the choices.
The walk to the centre of town (5 mins downhill) was a delight with a lovely church just before you reach the bottom of the hill. The views are lovely. We were very lucky with the weather - it was sunny and bright blue skies so we got some amazing photos. A few places to eat in town. Iceland is generally expensive so we only had dinner out in a restaurant that offered a salad bar and also a la carte options. Not unreasonably priced. I think we paid about £30 for dinner with drinks. The coffee shop in town offers free internet so we spent some time there to catch up with civilization!
Akureyri was a breath of fresh air and very pretty. We'd definitely use Hotel Edda again.
