Great friendly staff. Good location peaceful yet 2 minutes walk from center. Parking hall too expensive but outdoor parking free.

I was in Jyvaskyla, Finland on business for 5 days. We stayed at Hotel Scandic as we were told that was our best option. I was apprehensive about it and quite upset at losing out on Marriott rewards since Jyvaskyla has no Marriott properties or any other American chains for that matter.

I was however, pleasantly surprised.

Room:
Check in was quick and painless. The room itself is quite stark compared to anything in a Marriott or Hilton property but confortable. I don't think there is a concept of King-size beds but what they did was put together 2 twins. Didn't bother me. The bed itself is a platform bed but I had no complaints. Rooms have the normal necessaties such as iron and ironing table, TV, phone, etc.; however, I did not like the fact that there is no phone by the bedside or no cordless phone. So calling home was unconfortable sitting at the work desk. TV is really boring if you're not from FInland. Most of the time all you can watch is BBC and sometimes catch older seasons of House, Friends, etc. One night Harry Potter was on. If the channel is in English, there's always CC which you cannot disable.

Bathroom:
I loved the radiant tiles - having heated tile floors in a 20 - 30 F temprature was awesome ! Bathrooms do not have individual soaps and shampoos, etc. Instead there is a hand soap dispenser by the sink and a shower get/shampoo-in-one dispenser in the bath tub. I had read a previous review and brought my own.

Meals:
Really good breakfast and it's included in the price of the room....loved these little rice pancakes and liver pate. We didn't eat dinner here, but it always smelled good.

Internet
Internet was free - You have to request it from the reception. It was fast and reliable.

Gym:
OK. 2 treadmills and one bicycle, free weights. and one life-cyle multi-use machine. I was able to work out all days and there was hardly any one there at 5 AM.

Overall - not bad - just wish I'd earn rewards for hotels I can use back in the States.

We stayed here partly business, partly pleasure at the end of the heatwave of 2010. We had lovely weather so were able to be outdoors always. The hotel has a swimming pool, sauna (you are in Finland!) and a small fitness room. We didn't use any of these but they must be invaluable in winter.
The hotel rooms are fine, the airconditioning during the summer was probably very useful but we didn't need it. Although there are currently roadworks outside the hotel our room was at the back and we heard no noise at all.
The breakfast buffet was good, the service friendly enough.
We ate one evening at the Colonial Bar, the meals are large portions so be prepared.
The hotel is situated a convenient 3 minute walk from the station, where incidentally you can get a nice coffee and cake. The tourist information is just up the street from the hotel and the covered shopping centres are nearby.
If you want to walk around the lake, I can recommend it, but remember that to get to the lake you need to get over the railway lines - go to the station and over the bridge.
I would definitely recommend the hotel for a quiet, comfortable stay.

We stayed here for two nights for a friend's wedding. The location is very good, close to the train station and the centre (although Jyväskylä is small anyway). Rooms are pretty standard, neat and clean with no personal touches. Beds were nice and the air-conditioning worked well. There's also free wi-fi in the room, you can get the password from the reception. Service at the reception was very friendly.

The room price includes a breakfast buffet which was also the standard Scandinavian one with a reasonably good selection but nothing really special. We didn't use the restaurant but noticed that it's only open in the evenings after 5 pm. There's a small shop at the reception where you can get snacks, sandwiches, and anything you may have forgotten to pack such as toothbrushes etc.

What I really liked was the hotel's strive to be eco-friendly: recycling bins in the hotel room, no individually packaged soaps etc. What I didn't like so much was that we paid 93e for the room which is a bit expensive for such a small town when you compare with the usual offers from other hotel chains in Finland such as Sokos hotels . On the other hand everything seemed to be of a slightly better standard so I guess the price was acceptable. Besides we joined their frequent visitor program for free and got restaurant vouchers worth of 6e and free newspapers.
