Let’s face it, it’s cold in Helsinki the vast majority of the year, so the perfect central location of GLO serves you well when you want to avoid freezing in the cold. (Remember: -15 Celsius feels -25 C or colder with windchill factor, and yes, it’s always windy in Helsinki).
GLO has a nice interior, a design hotel feel. Lobby would be a perfect meeting spot, but doors opening to two directions make the space inconveniently cold. At breakfast you enjoy a buffet with good variety, but they’ll charge you extra for cappuccino and any other decent coffee with espresso, which at this kind of a hotel should not be the case.
We’ve stayed at GLO twice before, both times in a regular room. This time we faced a 5-day stay and decided to take a deluxe room which really gives you some three times more space. They give a nice set of amenities which only misses the conditioner (an essential in a climate that without conditioner makes your hair go static). Moreover, we couldn’t make any use of the clumsy, gigantic bathrobes – not everyone is size XXL! They had their wifi down from Friday to Saturday which you wouldn’t expect in one of the leading IT countries.
The gym access comes with the deluxe room (you otherwise pay 10€ each time you go). It is a nice, well-equipped gym. However, they only open it from 7am on weekdays and 9am on Saturdays which makes it impossible to make it early enough to breakfast and then to early meetings after a morning workout. Worse yet, the gym is not open at all on Sundays. In this regard the hotel management should try to understand better their guests daily routines and widen the window for the gym access.
With its location and design GLO has all the potential, but a more attention to guest experience would be needed to make it feel special.
