“Good Place to Stay outside of Helsinki”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 April 2010

Hotel Matinlahti is a hotel we stayed at just outside of Helsinki, Finland. It was part of a Contiki tour we were doing.

The hotel is easily accessible by bus from the Kamppi bus station (15-20 min trip), and is located in the middle of a forest, with a few houses here and there.

The staff is friendly, speaks English pretty well, after checking in, besides the keys for your room, you get a cable for the free broadband Internet connection, and discount coupons for dinner, which is only served during working days.
The hotel is in a beautiful area and within walking distance from a lake w/ beach volleyball, playground and other water activities. The breakfast buffet (inc. w/ room price) was very good and nice variety of items to choose from. Besides the standard rooms, they also have a dormitory there.

There is WiFi connection in the lobby, for which you can get a login/password which expires after a few hours, then you need to request another one. There was only one computer available as well, so get in line!

Rooms are really simple, but clean. The bathroom in our room was really small. There seemed to be many Russian guests staying in the hotel.

About the Breakfast buffet, It had pancakes and toast and coffee and bacon. Was really done well and I would eat that again.

Overall, good place to stay if you don't like being in big city. As well lots of peace and quiet out here.

“Might book this one if all other hotels in Espoo are fully booked”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2009

Soviet looking hotel. Staff are okay but their English is not so good. Rooms are not clean, shower is old, curtains are broken, restaurant lacks atmosphere, nothing to do in the immediate area.

“Never again , Hotel for wild people”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2009

Hotel - It's not good word for this place, better to say camping under the roof.
Hotel is old and looking like old.I was on october and in the room was totaly cold and dark - only one lamp worked.Enter card (keys) working not so good ,so I spend 20 minutes before I pass the door.
In evening on desk You can't buy any drink's (soft too).Breakfast not acceptable and not fresh.Price like for normal hotel (60 Euro).
Maby on summer is better, but if it is ,so why they are still open on autumn?
Never again.

“....Not somewhere to linger as the Finnish winter approaches”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2009

I stayed in this hotel at the very beginning of October. Hotels are relatively expensive in Helsinki and this one had come in at a good price. It is located out a bit from the centre but relatively near to where I wanted to go. It set in a wooded area, rather off the beaten track and looking out of the window reminded me a little of staying in student university accommodation. Staying in a variety of hotels during the course of a year which I do, some ‘oldish’, some new, tends to sensitise one more to situations where you come across something that is rather plain and older. This is what, in my view, the Hotel Matinlahti is like. Minimalistic with regard to the reception and staff around in the hotel when I arrived rather late but nonetheless the reception were able to offer a beer in return for payment but not much else in the way of food etc. Old fashioned in that it has wide corridors and stone staircases. I was given a reasonably large room which was best described as plain & simple. It was not the place I felt I wanted to linger for a long stay. Maybe in summer when the sun was shining, it would take on a different air but in the long nights of the Finnish early winter it is somewhat different. Not too much excited me about the breakfast..... I was pleased soon to be on my way.
