First, the good things:
1. It is very well located, a short walk from the town centre, from 2 major shopping centres, the bus stop and the railway station.
2. We stayed in a private room, and it was reasonably spacious - 2 adults, a kid and 2 HUGE suitcases fit in, no problem.
3. Big clean bathroom.
4. The basement has a self catering kitchen and dining room.
The 2 negative points about the hostel are
1. Like most HI hostels, there is a 2 pm check in, and most trains from the capital reach Rovaniemi in the morning or night. The problem is, unlike other hostels, you can't even get in to the hostel and use the rest room and lobby, since it is staff less, and can be entered only by punching in an access code which gets activated at 2 pm on the day of your check in.
We paid for an extra half day to enter the hostel, because the alternative was to stand on freezing streets for 6 hours on a Sunday morning.
2. You have to go to a hotel called Santa Claus to check in, and that truly is a pain. Check in, lug all your baggage to Hotel Rudolf - boring.
But for the money you are paying, the rooms are very good value. Service is nil of course, it is staff less. Your rooms get cleaned only after you check out, and you put your access cards in a mail box, and your linen in a basket near the lift.
