“So glad we stayed here instead of the city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We came to Rovaniemi purely to see Santa. We have 2 children, aged 5 + 7. On a friend's recommendation we stayed out of the city at Sky hotel. This is situated 3 km from the city on the top of a ski resort. There are both cabins and a hotel section with rooms. We stayed in a cabin and we were delighted. I had emailed and called the hotel several times whilst planning and spoke to Mira, the most helpful person you could ever imagine. She advised us to stay in 'large' family cabin and it was perfect for the 4 of us.

CABIN- the large cabin was half of a 'house' (see photo). it had a main bedroom downstairs, bathroom/laundry/sauna all in one area , lounge and kitchen. The (steep) upstairs had a double bedroom as well as a large landing area with a couch (?sofa bed) and a single bed. It could have accommodated another 2 children easily. It had a lovely feel with cable TV and basic food items like tea/coffee etc. It had a driveway but as we didn't have a car we had to walk to the hotel which was quite far along the roads or quick if you took a short cut uphill through the snow. That was fun for us but could be difficult if your mobility wasn't good.

HOTEL- The hotel is out of town with no buses. The taxi ride to town is about 12-15 euros one way. A taxi to Santa park or Santa village is 20-24 Euros one way.A taxi to the airport is 40 Euros one way. I didn't see the rooms but there is a nice lobby area with a fireplace, TV and free internet access. There was also a movie theatre which showed movies every afternoon for the kids (even with free popcorn!) There was a kids playroom nearby too. However, the most spectacular part was the restaurant upstairs that had windows from top to bottom and overlooked the ski field and mountain trees. It was beautiful to eat and look at snow covered trees and the distant lights of the city at night. The food was excellent, though the a-la-carte was better than the buffet. There were plastic sleds that we borrowed from reception to slide down the hills but they go really fast and are quite dangerous when you hit a bump and go airborne! We did use the sleds to go down the road to a small supermarket when we arrived as it was a fair walk and the kids got lazy so we pulled them along!

SKIING- Unfortunately we didn't ski as we had a 5 yr old who had never cross-country skied before so we didn't try but I would have loved to cross country ski in this extremely beautiful area. There was a downhill run with one chairlift but I didn't think it was worth it for us (and we had just come from skiing in the French Alps). It is only light for about 5 hours. There is also a toboggan run but it was closed as it wasn't cold enough (it has to be < -5 degrees) to make snow for the toboggans.

Overall, I am so glad we stayed here in this picturesque resort in the lovely cabin. My kids enjoyed the snow and sledding more than Santa almost! It was worth the money we spent on taxis each day but you have to be prepared to do that or walk the 45 mins into town.
We spent Xmas Eve here and there was a xmas tree that the staff brought out decorations for and the kids put them on. After dinner Santa came to visit in another room and the kids went in and got gifts which was a nice touch.

Room Tip: A large cabin is suitable for 4-6 people but has steep stairs to upstairs.

“Best location. Best restaurant. Great holiday!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

Cannot understand the reviews that I have read on here that slate this place. Its a top end 3 star hotel, are people that snobby? Want better? Go 5 star.

I've been to a lot of places over Europe and, given the 3 star rating for this hotel ( ALSO KNOWN AS FOREST HEIGHTS ) its by far one of the best hotels I have stayed at. First of all, the rooms. Basic but more than comfortable with English tv channels, maids cleaning the rooms and changing bed linen every day plus your own personal sauna in your bathroom which is great after rolling about in the snow. There is an open log fire in reception, internet access and a cinema which would be best described as a basic auditorium. The views from both the back and the front of the hotel are spectacular. You are on the peak of a hill and either side of you there is forest forest and more forest. Ideal for snow ball fights or skiing on the slope that runs beside the hotel. The best view of the surroundings is from the outstanding restaurant. If that restaurant were in England you would be paying a mint to eat there, its amazing. This is a restaurant that has a Michelin Star and was also voted 5th best restaurant in the whole of Finland for its food quality, according to the Thomson rep. Great selection, great food, friendly staff but just dont drink alcohol because you will need to remortgage your house to do so. ( Prices were the same all over Lapland, not just the hotel. £6 a pint of local beer! ) There is a little ice maze on the grounds and the walk you can take through the cottages set in the woods is just unreal. The cottages looked spectacular! We went on 18th December 2011 for 3 nights. My boy loved it and its worth every penny but i'd say go for 5 nights as you will be flat out every day on the 3 night trip, you will be cream crackered. All in all, an amazing hotel in amazing grounds in the magical place of Lapland.

1 final tip on Lapland as a whole, which I wasn't too clued up on before I went..... You get given snow boots, socks, all in one snow suit which is very warm and clean, waterproof gloves, scarf and balaclava. No need to go out spending loads before you go!!!!

“Dirty and very old hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2011

We were in this hotel for 1 night and it was a bad experience. The hole hotel is a non-maintained building and very dirty. We were there with a temperature outside from 26 degrees and inside our room was the temperature 27 degrees with no airco and no windows to open. It was just like an sauna. Everything in the hotel was broken or expire.

The only possitive was de surrounding from the hotel, a beautiful view and natur.

Room Tip: It's better to find an other hotel in this area.

“Beautiful Views over Rovaniemi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

We stayed here for a couple of nights to visit the Santa Village and the Zoo. Rooms were spacious, with the bedroom separate from the main living area. All rooms were quiet and comfortable and the breakfast had plenty of choice and all was good, including the view from the restaurant area.
If you are staying here, there are buses into town but having a car made it much easier, I would think walking is out of the question into town, and there is plenty of parking for your car.
The only downside was that the foyer area was teeming with children (love them and was travelling with our own) who took over the internet computers in the foyer and no-one stopped them - we were unable at any time to use them and we had wanted to keep up to date with the Queensland floods while we were away - BBC World News also did not work at this time, so again, were unable to find out any news which was quite frustrating.
Otherwise, the Hotel was good and we would stay again.

“Once in a lifetime!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2011

This was a once in a Lifetime trip to Lapland with my family, before they get too old! What can I say - it was absolutely wonderful.

Firstly the food was fantastic although we were on a Xmas break and the food wasn't anything special it was warm and tasty. The rooms are pretty small and basic but it's not too bad but theres no pool - not even an indoor one! So when it was too cold for us outside there wasn't much to do!

The hotel itself is set on the top of the Ski Hill, and has a toboggans that can be borrowed for free from outside the hotel and the kids loved it!. Rovaniemi itself is a lovely city with one main 'drag' it has lots of shops and a lovely xmas market which some really nice gifts for friends back home.

About a 15 minute taxi ride away is Santa Village - its lovely again it's got some nice shops but loads of things to do, like toboganning and even seeing the big man himself!

This was a dream come true for me to visit here and I absolutely loved it...probably even more than the Kids - A lovely Hotel in an absolutely amazing part of the world!
