“Atmopheric and cosy, but modest”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

I stayed at the Lord Nelson for two nights in October 2011. The hotel has a highly developed nautical theme right down to the floors having deck names. Every detail in the hotel has been thoroughly design to give a ship-like feeling. The place is dripping with atmosphere and is very cosy. Staff was very friendly and nice. The location is as good as it gets, right in the hart of Stockholms old town.

My room was small. I normally like big rooms, but I did not really mind the size of this one, even though it probably was one of the smallest I have stayed in. It somehow felt right for the theme and with the fact that this is a very old house tucked inbetween other old houses in the oldest part of the city. But, hotel rooms should not be smaller than this, and many will find it very small indeed. My one actual complaint about the room was that it was a bit dark. Too dark to read in bed. And the only light switch was by the door, so you had to stumble in darkness from the door to the bed.

Another downside of the hotel is that it is beginning to show a bit wear and tear and would benefit from a bit of refurbishment. Breakfast could also have been better. And I thought that the price was a bit high compared to the feel og the hotel.

This is a small, quite modest hotel without a bar or restaurant, but if that is ok with you, and if you like the general appearence og it, you may love it.

I find it difficult to set the rating on this. I thought it was ok with some aspects being very good and some not so good. I left with a good feeling. The reason I only put up three dots for the rating is that objectively compared to other hotels, this is where I think it is.

“I love small hotels”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

The Nelson, located in the nicest part of Old Stockholm, Gamla Stan. It´s the narrowest hotel building in the city, less than six meters wide. Rooms are accordingly small.
But really nice! Pretty woodwork, faultlessly clean, nice breakfast and staff, maritime interior.
Quaint, but not corny.
Stayed there a couple of times when visiting Stockholm the last few years, Always check if they have a room available.

“Charming, cozy and right in the city centre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

This tiny hotel is right in the most central part of Stockholm, walking distance from public transport and on a pedestrian street dense with shops and bars/restaurants.
The rooms are small but very cozy, the place resembles an old ship and is well looked after. Good continental breakfast. Good reception desk service.

“Right in the middle of everything”

Just like on a real ship, the rooms in this nautical-themed hotel are small. So what. Don't stay in the room when you're in Stockholm! Staff was very friendly. Breakfast was just OK. Best benefit is location. Less than two blocks from the palace and about five from the metro.

“Truly Memorable !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011

Those of us who stay in a range of different hotels in different countries would probably struggle to remember details of them a few months down the line. I’m certain that one hotel everybody will remember will be this one – and in my case it will be for all the right reasons.

Those that stay there with an up-front idea of the size of the hotel will be pleasantly surprised. The key is the location – in what is possibly the busiest street in the city for the tourist trade. As well as all the attractions of Gamla Stan on your doorstep you are just a short walk from Slussen for the Djurgarden ferry, to the royal palace, or the highly efficient local “blue bus” – numbers 2 or 3.

I can imagine those from North America would find the rooms small – but unless you are claustrophobic you’ll find them to be “something different to the norm”. They still have a TV, decent sized shower and windows that open. I was in Stockholm in August during four or five days of unbroken sun, yet didn’t have an issue with the room getting too warm, as it is well shaded.

Breakfast can get a bit cramped at the weekend when it doesn’t start until 8am, but otherwise it is well managed with plenty on offer. The nautical theme was quirky but interesting, as was the information about the hotel, including the fact that at 6 metres wide it is the narrowest hotel in the City.

One of the highlights of the hotel, apart from the unique location, is the “poop deck”, where you can go up a few steps and onto the roof of the hotel, where there are tables and chairs to sit and admire the rooftops of the Swedish capital. On a calm evening you may see the regular hot-air balloon flights go past – on one evening they flew either side of the hotel, low enough so you could hear the burners being used.

The free wifi worked really well for me (on the third floor), with no issues of connectivity.
The staff at the hotel are exceptionally helpful too, and with a bargain rate on offer (accepting Stockholm is an expensive city for hotels), then all-in-all it was a most memorable experience.
