This hotel was right in the city - which is picturesque! The streets are cobbled, there is a large tower just outside and restaurants all around us.
The rooms are small, but good for the price. The bathroom was very cramped, yet the shower was still large enough for two. There's just no room to do much in front of the sink or toilet. The shower was hot, but a water saving showerhead made it a little weak. The tap water was difficult to get hot, but it does get there slowly. The decor of the room and entire hotel was matched nicely, with older fixtures and wall coverings, but modern linen and decorations. The beds were firm, with a soft 10cm thick bed liner on top. Ours were two singles pushed together, which is common in Sweden. Seperate quilts, very fresh linen.
There was a moderate sized flatscreen TV with about 8 of the standard cable channels for Sweden, including channels that play news, movies and sports. Most channels are english subbed to Swedish, except for the first two. There was plenty of room for bags shoes and coats. A small desk with a desk chair and a comfy chair sat in the corner. The room included free wifi, although that requires you to sign up and get a 24hour free access. Didn't use it after that so Im not sure if you pay to get more access, but you could sign up with another email if you're desperate for more free wifi.
There was a gym across the road which you could get free access to by asking at the desk. Inside the hotel is a relaxation room with a large jacuzzi and sauna, along with a wet room/drying off room with a tv. The entire hotel is non-smoking, so you can exit the building on the 1st floor to an outside area where you can smoke. Parking is in a secure garage for 99SEK/night.
From the hotel it is a 100m walk to most local restaurants, cute shops and the town center. About a 10-15min walk to Kalmar slott/castle and the same to Kalmar domkyrka/cathedral.
We chose to eat at the hotels own restaurant on the first night, because it was the only thing open at 8:30pm. However this was an excellent choice, as the food was delicious, well presented and the chef even spoke to us directly about our meals.
All four of us, including a vegetarian, enjoyed our meals. They were a little expensive compared to normal dining, but well worth the extra cost. Approx. 90-200SEK depending on your choice of main. You could also choose 2 courses for 250SEK.
The breakfast buffet including cereals, muesli, many different breads, meats, cheeses, sill, fruit, scrambled eggs and bacon. I was impressed by everything except the bacon (deep fried to a black crisp and stuck together) and the juice, which was not real fruit juice.
The only real downside to this hotel was the location. At night the streets were full of drunks yelling to each other and kicking bottle, but they seemed to drift away by midnight both nights. There was also a lot of young people in the hotel drinking, parting etc. and walking the halls until 2 in the morning talking way too loudly. There seemed to be something going on in the city during our stay though, so this might not always be the case.
We had someone in a wheelchair travelling with us, and they got a special room with a wider entrance. The lift goes from the basement carpark to all floors, and it was easy for her to get around. Outside in the city it was a bit more difficult with the cobblestones, but manageable still.
This was the cheapest hotel I found in Kalmar, booked on expedia.se. I would definitely recommend it as value for money.
