“I still don't get it...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2010

Even after a four night stay, I can't work out what market niche this hotel is trying to reach.

Rooms: very clean and fairly recently refurbished, with some effort put into fabrics and decorative elements - it looks nice in a clean, understated, Scandinavian kind of way. There is, however, very little space to work if you're a business traveller, and even less space to unpack a bag if you're staying a few days. There was very little noise from the corridor even at busy times, or between rooms. Views from high up in the hotel were lovely and the best thing about the room. Bathroom was nice with great underfloor heating, but the eco-friendly profile of the hotel of course means no tub, let alone any toiletries bar a non-descript refill bottle of soap. On the whole, my room was fine but not extraordinary.

Staff and service: I stayed in this hotel over Christmas, with extended family. The website indicated that the hotel would have a choice of dining options, as well as a pub adjacent to the hotel itself. No mention of closure during certain dates was made. In actual fact, we were able to have dinner in the hotel on a single evening of our stay, and lunch was a no-go throughout, and when asking the reception staff for advice, we were told to make sure to "have a big breakfast" as there was nothing open in or near the hotel. Admittedly, the breakfast buffet was excellent, but the comment felt very indicative of the attitude to service in this hotel. We were offered a small discount when pointing this out to staff, but above all, staff could have made a great difference if they had been willing to tackle the problem of stranded tourists with a little bit of imagination rather than with a shrug. At the price we paid, I would have expected a different attitude.

In sum, this hotel is a decent choice if you need a place to sleep, but don't expect anything beyond that, whether in terms of work support or that little extra touch to make a vacation an experience.

“Typical conference hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2008

This is a typical conference hotel. It's really boring and is no more than a "cubicle" where you spend the night. With that said, Scandic City Sundsvall is officially a three star hotel and room standard is probably four star (my impression).

There is no room service, no hotel bar. I'm a bit surprised that I had to pay 1500 SEK/night for this hotel. But my room was super clean and newly renovated. Flat screen tv and a small sofa.

There's a Scottish Pub adjacent to the hotel which is crowded with single eating business perople. Food is ok but hey, GB is not famous for gourmet food.

Next time I will try Hotel Knaust which is ranked #1 at Tripadvisor. Look for my next report.

“Mediocre and dated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2008

The hotel is just to the north of the centre, and within easy walking distance of both the train station and the town centre. The rooms are an average size and were clean and quiet. The decor in the hotel in general is quite tired and worn and from the outside you expect more. The breakfast which was included was mediocre, although it was in keeping with the rest of the hotel. In general if you're only staying here for one night then it's perfectly adequate, but I'm not sure you'd want to spend a week here.

“Just about OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2007

I booked the Scandic Sundsvall City as it was easy to reserve a room online and seemed close to the centre of the city.

Arrival was OK, it is difficult to miss the large hotel building when approaching by car. They have a garage under the hotel for parking.

The first problem came after checking in. Our first room had a sink in the bathroom which wasn't connected to the drain pipe! In fairness the girl on reception sorted us out a change of room straight away, but it wasn't an ideal start to our stay.

The hotel in general is a little dated in feel. This seems a shame as it does have the potential to be better. The bar near reception was nice and the staff friendly. There is a cinema next door which seemed popular with locals. Unfortunately some of the other hotel's claimed features (e.g. golf simulator) seem to have long since been removed.

It is about a 10 minute walk to the centre of the city, which is a fairly small place. Another tip would be not to go to Sundsvall in the second week of July as the place is dead (apparently everyone was on holiday) and many of the restaurants didn't even open.

We used Sundsvall as a base to explore the High Coast further north but, to be honest, you would probably be better off finding a small hotel in the national park area itself as Sundsvall as a place felt somewhat lacking in character and life!

  • Liked — The bar was OK!
  • Disliked — Dated in feel, and questionable plumbing.
