“Great place to be”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

This hotel holds everything you might expect from a hotel in the Northern part of Sweden. Big room, free internet, friendly, helpfull employees and last but not least a great breafast, everything was there also for people with special wishes e.g. diabetics, glute-free etc.
Hotel lies in the center of the city of Sundsvall on walking distance of the trainstation and along the highway from Stockholm to the North. Great stop when you are en route to the Nordkap

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the city-side, otherwise there is some traffic-noise in the morning

“Business stay”

Standard hotel at good location and ok for business travellers. There are better hotels in the city.

Location 7/10:
Since this is a very small city in northern part of the country, if the location is in the city, its good. Within minutes walking distance from the central station and to the city center with stores and restaurants. Easy access if you come driving and approximately 25 min from the airport.

Lobby/Check-in 4/10:
A very average and nothing special about this check in counter. Nice service and fruit and a daily newspaper for top floor guests. Managed to receive a late checkout, which was good. Looked very average and nothing special at all.
There was a small area where you could by snacks, newspapers or magazines and coffee, or other toilet accessories, like tooth paste.

Room 4/10:
The rooms are old but newly renovated. Furniture are standard and a bit IKEA. Ok size room for a “family room, with two single beds. There was no mini bar and no safe, nor any coffee/tea maker or espresso machine. Extremely small pillows in the bed and just one per bed.
The bathroom is old and looks very standard with no special things at all. Very boring and standard, or even below standard. Would not say high speed, because it was not, but at least free.

Restaurants 5/10:
The breakfast buffet is good, with a good of choices of hot and colds. Wide selection of bread, but just standard here as well.

Other:
Cannot comment on the conference part. There is a small, but newly equipped fitness center with sauna, which was better than many better hotels. There is parking in the building for a small fee per day and direct access to the room floors. There is a small gas station behind the hotel, where drinks and snacks can be bought, but distance to the city is only a few minutes and better stores.

Room Tip: Sign up for a Scanic membership upon check in.

“Nice location, good enough for short stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2011

Stayed here with my family just for one night in middle of June 11. Reception was cold as usual (Swedish style) and inspite of no crowd, it took more that 30 minutes for the reception lady to come out from her FIKA area and give me the key to my room.
Room was on 8th floor so it had a lovely view over the city. Clean room, toilet n well made bed. Corridor had not so good smell, very likely because the carpet was not maintained in proper way.
I asked the reception for parking my car and she very coldly answered, its weekend so you can park for free on the road (The hotel has its own Parking...!)
It is next to the Centrum so many good restaurants are at walking distance from the hotel. Hotel has Irish Pub but as it was Saturday eve and after looking to the crowd walking in, I avoided it. We went to a Chinese hotel near by which was very very GOOD and I strongly recommand it.
Morning breakfast was good, enought variety allthough it had very less choice of warm dishes.
In nutshell, its a good hotel for short stay. If you are used to cold Swedish hospitality then Scandic brand offers you exactly that, do not expect anything more..!

“I still don't get it...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2010

Even after a four night stay, I can't work out what market niche this hotel is trying to reach.

Rooms: very clean and fairly recently refurbished, with some effort put into fabrics and decorative elements - it looks nice in a clean, understated, Scandinavian kind of way. There is, however, very little space to work if you're a business traveller, and even less space to unpack a bag if you're staying a few days. There was very little noise from the corridor even at busy times, or between rooms. Views from high up in the hotel were lovely and the best thing about the room. Bathroom was nice with great underfloor heating, but the eco-friendly profile of the hotel of course means no tub, let alone any toiletries bar a non-descript refill bottle of soap. On the whole, my room was fine but not extraordinary.

Staff and service: I stayed in this hotel over Christmas, with extended family. The website indicated that the hotel would have a choice of dining options, as well as a pub adjacent to the hotel itself. No mention of closure during certain dates was made. In actual fact, we were able to have dinner in the hotel on a single evening of our stay, and lunch was a no-go throughout, and when asking the reception staff for advice, we were told to make sure to "have a big breakfast" as there was nothing open in or near the hotel. Admittedly, the breakfast buffet was excellent, but the comment felt very indicative of the attitude to service in this hotel. We were offered a small discount when pointing this out to staff, but above all, staff could have made a great difference if they had been willing to tackle the problem of stranded tourists with a little bit of imagination rather than with a shrug. At the price we paid, I would have expected a different attitude.

In sum, this hotel is a decent choice if you need a place to sleep, but don't expect anything beyond that, whether in terms of work support or that little extra touch to make a vacation an experience.
