This hotel can best be described as rustic, but with the charm that comes with it. First of all, the hotel is in an excellent location if you are arriving / departing Kiruna by train, as it is located literally on the platform, however that said, it is a ten minute uphill walk to the city centre (but good for fitness !)
I was in room number 12, on the first floor facing away from the railway tracks (I could not hear any train noise, and I am a very light sleeper !). The corridor was a little dorm like, but the room itself was large, with rustic features such as timber floors and a double door (which I’ve never seen before in a hotel, very charming). The room also had a TV, desk, coat rack and luggage space, and bathroom (which was basically a wet room, but with a very hot and strong shower – excellent).
Breakfast is fairly basic, but sufficient (cold meats, cereals, breads etc) and when I was late to breakfast one morning, the manager (owner ?) took me into the kitchen and had me choose anything from the fridge I wanted, then set me up in the dining room with plates etc so that I would not go hungry, excellent service which I greatly appreciated.
The hotel also has a separate TV / rec. room, plus free internet PC. As stated, Kiruna town centre is about a ten minute walk, and note that (at least in winter) Kiruna basically closes down at 4:00pm on Saturday (including the main supermarket !) and until Monday morning there is almost nothing open. If you are looking for a cafe in town, would recommend cafe Safari, which has longer opening hours than most places in Kiruna, and has good food and coffee at reasonable prices (for Sweden !)
Bottom line is that this hotel (whilst not luxurious) is clean and safe, with a charm not found in more modern hotels. Additionally, the staff were very friendly and went out of their way to assist (eg breakfast) and that goes a long way these days. Good value, especially compared to other hotels in Kiruna
