I last stayed here before all the building work and massive extension was built, and chose to stay here again because of the proximity to the Airport, the Øresund Bridge and free and easy car parking. It's not in downtown Copenhagen, and a train or taxi journey would be necessary to get into town. For me to drive off to visit Danish and Swedish customers it's fine. Staying at a Scandic Hotel while in Scandinavia is my norm, and I’m normally a very contented (loyalty points earning) customer. This time I came away thinking their standards had slipped.
I arrived early evening on Sunday and walked into the impressive foyer to the reception desk on the far right, to be warmly greeted by the staff there. The reception area wasn’t warm itself though with staff huddling around the radiators to keep warm. In fact over the few days I stayed here, the public areas were always on the chilly side of things.
I was offered a room upgrade, but at DKK 300 (GBP 35 ish) per night extra I decided my standard room would be fine. The standard rooms seem to be in the older part of the hotel where I’ve stayed before. On arrival in the room I went to close the curtains/blackout blinds to discover they were badly torn down from the hangers and it would be impossible to exclude outside lights. So off I trudged to reception where I was courteously given another room. This one was hot and smelt of stale tobacco, which is bizarre in a smoke free hotel. I turned the radiator off deciding the smell would clear. Strangely it didn’t over the 3 days I stayed, even with the window open at every opportunity. I suspect it was something to do with the wardrobe as my clothes picked up the odour too. I looked on top of it to see it something was there that shouldn’t be. It was just a thick layer of dusk and an old sign to hang on the door. Not impressive, but probably not the cause of the smell.
The room was typically Scandic in style - just not a clean as I would have hoped for. There was lots of mould growing around the windows, and signs of spills etc down the sides of furniture and the bed. I think the mould was helped as there was no functioning air extraction in the shower room. Thinking about the shower room: Previous comments made me smile about the lack of a shower tray, and the bathroom floor getting wet. It’s true, but then that’s true of nearly every Scandinavian hotel, and is easily solved by putting a towel on the floor when you’ve finished. There are glass shower doors of course, so for me it’s no big deal. The shower was nice and powerful with the shower gel working well and smelling ok. In the same way the body lotion was good.
I dined in the hotel restaurant. The food was good, well presented, but like everything in Copenhagen at a price that makes you wince. Thankfully breakfast is included in the room price. As with all Scandics, it’s a great buffet with fresh everything! On my first morning back at home I missed the scrambled egg, bacon and fresh bread!
I’d stay here again, but I’m concerned that it’s not as clean as it ought to be/was in the past.
Room Tip: If it's not good, complain. Then unlike me complain again if the replacement is no better.
