“Fantastic hostel, weird location”

The only reason that I give this hostel a 4 rating and not a 5 is because it's a little ways off the beaten track and is a hefty walk to the nearest metro station. I was in Copenhagen for a 20 hour layover on the way back to America and came across the Sleep In Heaven hostel online and booked it because of a fantastic price and because they would happily allow a 17 year old traveling alone to check in. The atmosphere in the hostel is fantastic; full of fun and social aspects all encouraged and participated in by the staff of the hostel who go out of their way to make the in hostel experience a good one. One woman, I regret I forget her name, on staff very patiently helped explain the route to the metro station from the hostel taking care to explain it carefully and deal with my utter cluelessness of the city. The man who was there the night before was outstanding as a bartender/joke maker/snack server. He helped me understand the alien Danish currency a little bit better. All around, a great hostel well worth the money.

“Do have realistic expectations. Do not compare how much you pay each night. Denmark is a more expensive country.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2011

Having stayed in this hostel for a couple of nights over my trip to Copenhagen, I would like to provide a fair comment about this place. The place is one of the best priced hostels in copenhagen available. The journey from Copenhagen main station took about 15 minutes, though one should consult the website www.rejseplanen.dk prior to arrival.

However one needs to be aware that this hostel is located in a very old building, furnished in the style of ikea. Another point I found less pleasant was that the bathrooms were decorated in a black theme, and lights were only activated through motion detection. This meant that it was always a pseudo-mystery when visiting the showers, and more importantly, it was hard to determine whether the restrooms were clean, since much of the dirt could potentially be covered in the black background. Also, as I picked up something on the room floor, I realised that there was a thick layer of dust accumulated under the beds. This led me to question the thoroughness of the cleaning done to the rooms.

For breakfast, I did not choose to take breakfast at the hostel, given that there is a bakery providing fresh bread around the corner and a 7-eleven convenience store should there be other needs.

Also, note that 4% commission is charged for the use of foreign credit cards. Though this practice is common in Denmark, 4% is indeed somewhat in the higher range practiced, according to wikitravel.

One should also know the location of the hostel is not as convenient as it shows in Google Maps. Though there are buses plying the stretch, they become very infrequent during the evening hours. This translates to either a long half hour wait at a very quiet bus stop, or a walk down towards the hostel. You should plan your walk back the hostel once you arrive and once you are holding onto a city map. Navigating in Copenhagen on foot can get quite confusing, since there are few geographical landmarks or differences which allows one to locate oneself quickly.

I've seen better places in other european cities under the hostel category. Nevertheless this hostel should still be recommended, given the low price of the stay in this hostel based on Copenhagen standards and the relatively accessible location of this place.

“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

We arrived at this hostel at 1am, it was a metro ride from the airport and then a short walk. The directions that we were given were clear and we found the hostel with ease. We were in a 10bed mixed dorm in the new building. It was spacious, cheerful and clean. We were given key cards which open the room and a specific locker. Which was very useful. The toilets and the showers were clean. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful and the common room was colourful and chilled. The hostel is about a 20minute walk from the centre of Copenhagen which was we enjoyed as it was a scenic route. I would happily stay at this hostel again.

“Minor issues, good hostel overall and no bed bugs!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2011

I stayed at Sleep in Heaven for 4 nights

They did not inform me by email I would not be in actual hostel but rather 80meters down the road where they have a newly renovated location. I like this location no issues but just a thought.

Also be aware they charged me, a Canadian traveler 4% on VISA: A money grab. Also, expect a 20dkk deposit for your room card. As a traveler this is annoying as now my room card has a value to it. Hotels never do this, but this is not a hotel.'

Overall am happy, clean bathroom showers and rooms. Also note again, I am in the new part of hostel down the road from the main location so I assume the older part is not as nice.

Finally, the floor below the secondary part of hostel there was LOUD music until after midnight on friday and saturday night. Not part of hostel however if you want to go to sleep before midnight, you had better have earplugs.

“Name doesn't quite describe it.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2011

We arrived around 11 pm to find our hostel was out in the middle of nowhere. After discovering this we then were told that the only alcohol we could have there was the beer that they sold at inflated prices. It really made the social aspect of the hostel disappointing. Aside from that the bunks were three in a room stacked three high. The room was poorly ventilated and had an odor the whole time we were there. The 3 showers that were available stayed between lukewarm and icy, not ideal to say the least. I would only stay here again as a last resort.
