I spent this past weekend at the Admiral using it as my base to explore Copenhagen. I arrived Friday evening (18 Feb 12) and opted to take a taxi from the airport versus taking my chances with public transport. The cab fare was 265 DKK (38 EUR) for those of you who might want to do some budgeting.
I had a friendly and flawless checkin at the hotel and was placed in room 371 which faces the street. The room was ok and served its purpose - was clean and the bed was comfortable. The room contained a desk, two twin beds put together as a double, tv, minibar, chair, small loveseat and coffee table.
It was quite cold in Copenhagen this past weekend so I found I had to keep the curtains shut in the room otherwise the cold draft coming in from the small sliding door facing the street, defeated the purpose of having the radiator cranked. I also found the walls were a little thin as at night I could hear the television playing in the rooms on either side of me, and could hear children above me on Saturday morning.
In terms of the layout of the hotel, one thing I always do when travelling is always make sure I know how to get out in the event of a fire. Due to the structure of the building (plenty of wood and long narrow hallways) I felt much better knowing my room was close to an exit, but I can't say the same of many other rooms (i.e. those in the middle). Good news is the sprinkler system was clearly visible and a large fire hose was located almost half way between the elevator and exit on the side of the hotel I stayed on. Just an observation for those who might be a little paranoid about things like this.
Dining - I ate at the downstairs bar on Friday night and had a hamburger. It would have been delicious had it been fully cooked. I must admit I don't like seafood so my choices were pretty limited given the nature of the Salt restaurant. Service at the bar was ok, but when it gets busy you are almost better off going up to the bar to order (i.e. I gave up waiting on Saturday night after 10-15 minutes and just went back to my room).
Location - As mentioned, this hotel is in a great location for exploring. It is just over 1km away from the Little Mermaid (very nice walk) and much closer to Amalienborg's Castle, Nyhavn and the pedestrian zone.
For any smokers out there, there is no smoking in the hotel and the only choices you have are to go out front or out back (which is not open in the morning). Would be nice if the hotel could keep the back area open in the morning as there is nothing worse than hanging out at the front of a hotel first thing in the morning, still being half asleep, and having to greet people coming out of the hotel or being watched by a long line up of cab drivers waiting for customers (plus for those needing transportation).
Now that I have my bearings in Copenhagen, if I visted again, I might see what other hotels are out there. That being said, there is nothing wrong with the Admiral. The staff are all very friendly, hotel is in a good location, rates are extremely reasonable, and a good nights sleep can be had.
