“not impressed by the standard”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

My wonderful girlfriend had decided to surprise me with a romantic stay at Phoenix, one of the hotels in the Arp Hansen group.

She had booked the Romance package, and the confirmation e-mail from the hotel said: ROMANCE PACKAGE – Overnight stay, delicious breakfast buffet, chocolate-covered strawberries and Champagne upon arrival.

Phoenix had decided to upgrade us to a nice suite, which is always a nice beginning to a stay. However, in this suite, there were no chocolate-covered strawberries and Champagne. Instead, they had left some melon and a Brut of indistinguishable nature and taste. Luckily, this could be remedied, as I had brought my own champagne and wine. Since we had been upgraded, we decided not to complain about the shortcomings.

The suite was welcoming, romantic and with a nice, large bathroom, which was unfortunately covered with gold-painted fixtures to provide a more exclusive look. In our opinion, this has the opposite effect and testifies to extremely bad taste, because either you have the real thing, or you find something else.

We ordered some room service, which arrived quickly and tasted just fine.

We had booked a table at Umami in advance, as we were not really ”in the mood” to try out Phoenix’ own restaurant. Umami was good as always, well-prepared food and good service, yet with two minor drawbacks: The decor, which my girlfriend finds too cold, and their desserts, which are unfortunately put together very poorly with regard to taste. Therefore, if I were to write a new review of Umami, it would keep its 4 stars.

After our dinner, we went back to the hotel to have a few drinks at the bar. Unfortunately, the bar made our drinks from pre-mixed extract, which made them taste awfully.

The breakfast buffet was not the experience we had hoped for. It was boring, uninventive and inspired by American cuisine.

All in all, we had a lovely time at the hotel, but this was more due to us than the hotel, and we are not impressed by the standard.

“Excellent hotel in the city center”

This hotel with traditional decor is located in the very heart of Copenhagen, 3 minutes walk from Kongens Nytorv, the central square. You can reach almost any place in the city from there within 15-20 minutes max using the metro or bus.
Rooms are small but they have a study space and a comfortable bathroom. I was in the one facing the innner terrace and it was very pleasant and quiet.
Breakfast is lavish and features excelelnt Danish pastries. Staff is very helpful and polite and is eager to accommodate all your special needs.
Probably it is the best value for money if you want to stay in the center.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the inner terrace on the second floor are very quiet, but I cannot compare them to thos...

“medium”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

The staff was nice. Good location, in walking distance to all attractions. The rooms are quite small. The bed was a little uncomfortable. The bath room needs a renovation. Guest computers with internet at the reception was free almost all the time. Delicious breakfast, however expensive.

“Superb hotel in a brilliant spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

We stayed here in January and had a wonderful time.

The hotel is about a 5 minute walk (10 if you're dragging luggage behind you!) from Kongens Nytorv metro station. Getting from the airport to here couldn't be easier. If you *are* apprehensive about getting lost, Google Street view has you covered! On the way from the metro to the hotel you'll pass Nyhavn one of Copenhagen's main tourist spots. The main shopping district is also about 5-10 minutes walk away. The changing of the guard happens at noon every day and is also less than a 5 minute walk away. So I can't emphasise enough what a well positioned hotel this is.

The room itself was spacious and had a really comfy bed. (So much so, that I have since had to put up with my wife nagging that we need to change our mattress at home to whatever the Phoenix had.)

Breakfast is served on the lower ground floor, really easy to find, just open the lift door and you're there. Selection of hot breakfast food (boiled egg, scrambled egg, bacon, sausage), cold cuts, and a modest choice of fruit and cereals. And of course, pastries. Lots of pastries. Don't feel guilty about loading up in the morning - chances are you'll be walking it all off - Copenhagen is very much a walking city.

Also, car buffs might be interested to know that there is a Tesla car showroom right next door to drool over.

“I had a great stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

I had a great stay at the Phoenix hotel. I paied a little bit extra to get upgraded and got a spacious room with a nice view of Copenhagen's roof tops. I had an excellent sleep. I ordered room service and had an excellent hamburger and dessert - very happy with the food (I like to order in when I travel by myself on business).

The hotel is also very close to Nyhavn and quite close to other attractions.
