My wonderful girlfriend had decided to surprise me with a romantic stay at Phoenix, one of the hotels in the Arp Hansen group.
She had booked the Romance package, and the confirmation e-mail from the hotel said: ROMANCE PACKAGE – Overnight stay, delicious breakfast buffet, chocolate-covered strawberries and Champagne upon arrival.
Phoenix had decided to upgrade us to a nice suite, which is always a nice beginning to a stay. However, in this suite, there were no chocolate-covered strawberries and Champagne. Instead, they had left some melon and a Brut of indistinguishable nature and taste. Luckily, this could be remedied, as I had brought my own champagne and wine. Since we had been upgraded, we decided not to complain about the shortcomings.
The suite was welcoming, romantic and with a nice, large bathroom, which was unfortunately covered with gold-painted fixtures to provide a more exclusive look. In our opinion, this has the opposite effect and testifies to extremely bad taste, because either you have the real thing, or you find something else.
We ordered some room service, which arrived quickly and tasted just fine.
We had booked a table at Umami in advance, as we were not really ”in the mood” to try out Phoenix’ own restaurant. Umami was good as always, well-prepared food and good service, yet with two minor drawbacks: The decor, which my girlfriend finds too cold, and their desserts, which are unfortunately put together very poorly with regard to taste. Therefore, if I were to write a new review of Umami, it would keep its 4 stars.
After our dinner, we went back to the hotel to have a few drinks at the bar. Unfortunately, the bar made our drinks from pre-mixed extract, which made them taste awfully.
The breakfast buffet was not the experience we had hoped for. It was boring, uninventive and inspired by American cuisine.
All in all, we had a lovely time at the hotel, but this was more due to us than the hotel, and we are not impressed by the standard.
