“Oh dear - a hotel becoming very tired”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2010

Oh dear, this hotel, with spacious rooms, and excellent aspect, has become very tired. A lack of motivation and resource is evident everywhere - dilapidated lifts, drab lobby, slapdash buffet breakfast, and staff who are less than welcoming, and less than helpful. A great shame to see a building and a site that has so many advantages (the rooms are twice the size of the nearby Quality Hotel, and with infinitely better views) being squandered.

“Not 4* - budget 3* hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2010

I was expecting a 4 star hotel, which I actually got was a tired 70a/80s basic 3* hotel (eg the sort that keep afloat by booking in budget coach holidays) This failure to meet expectations makes this review harsher than it would have been if I had been expecting a 3*, as it is a reasonable budget 3* hotel.
On the positiives, it had a good choice of buffet breakfast, location was 5mins drive to the city centre, bathrooms in hotel are reasonable quality, Fridge in room. Value for money for a 3* hotel was reasonable (but would have prefered to pay more and have a better standard of hotel). Internet access available in lobby, Big car park - drive in and the barrier opens, token needed to get out again.
On the negatives, these mainly surround tired and dated decor/equipment. The lifts were obviously 30 years old, and although worked, made loud clanking noises. Furniture in room was late 70s/early 80s and while perfectly usable, looked well used. Picture over bed had big crack. Door to balcony had small window in top that did not shut properly which meant the room was quite noisy as the room overlooked the front of the hotel, with a main road between the hotel and park opposite. Room painted grey - mmm!. No aircon in any rooms in hotel.
Toiler roll was not replaced on 1st night, so had to go down to reception for more, and got handed 2 to take back, so seemed like a normal occurance. You could see that the carpet was grey with dust under the bed, where it had obviously not been cleaned for a long time - the rest of the room was cleaned well.
Breakfast was in a conference room, which seemed still set up for conferences with the way tables were set out in long rows at the rear - zero ambience. Given quality of hotel, did not eat there for evening meal and went into Aalborg where wide choice of restaurants.
The bill was charged in full on arrival - that says it all, as they must have had people leaving when they saw that it was budget 3* rather than plush 4*.
If you want a basic budget 3* this will be fine. If you want a 4* pay more and go to the Radisson which is right on the river/fiord front, and looked much nicer.

“International standard European business hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 May 2010

I've stayed in quite a few hotels in Europe and they can be something of a lottery, especially in smaller cities. The Hotel Hvide Hus was more like a standard international hotel, with larger rooms, normal fit out (eg had a bar fridge in room; movies on TV; phone; etc), a good breakfast, Internet access and so on.

It's not the most picturesque place - 15 stories, a bit of a concrete box, a little way outside of the centre of town and, no doubt, is primarily used for conferences, events and the like (which is why I was there). But it is surrounded by lovely open parks, is set back from main roads so is nice and quiet, and town centre is a shortish walk (it's also accessible from the train station and is a short - if expensive - taxi from airport).

Three things to like: rooms have balconies; bathrooms are large enough to manage ok (by European standards); service was very friendly and the staff speak excellent English and are friendly and helpful. Oh - a 4th thing - there's a bar o the 15th floor - not a brilliant range of drinks or service, but beautiful views.

Wasn't so happy with the Internet access which was unreliable wireless; beds were not especially comfortable and the heating was a little fierce.

It's unlikely I will return to Aalborg, since my work doesn't normally take me there, but I would stay at this hotel again, if there on business. I don't think I would recommend it for a genuine holiday - I prefer to find a place with more character - but it certainly works for its main purpose. It's a very good conference hotel, as well, if you are thinking of running an event there.

“Dissapointed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2008

Overview:
I attended a conference in the hotel, so didn't have much choice. I also could not see many other hotels in Aalborg, so you may be stuck with this one.

Price:
I paid a special rate of about $200 USD per night (approx). I would normally expect a lot more paying that much

Location:
The hotel is a quick walk to the train station. This was very convenient

Service:
If we needed anything we had to visit reception, they would not come to the room.

Rooms:
They have tried to make the rooms stylish, whilst ruining the feel with some big problems.
The room was split into 4: the foyer, bathroom, bedroom and balcony.
Between each section (and the doorway to the main "common" hallway, there was a wooden part of a doorframe. This looked out of place, as if the builders forgot to remove it once they installed the door, and I kept tripping on it.
The powerpoint was in a very awkward position.

Bathroom:
The shower was not really separated by anything form the rest of the bathroom. The water went all over the rest of the bathroom floor as a result. The towel racks were heated.

Laundry:
There was no washer or dryer for guests to use, but you could pay an enormous amount to use their premium washing service (about $4 for each par of socks or underwear, my load would have cost about $100 all together including shirts and pants). I ended up hand-washing my underwear and socks and putting them on the heated towel rails to dry, instantly saving $50

Iron:
The hotel is apparently a business hotel, yet there were no irons in the rooms (big rooms but no facilities to use up the space). I had to bring my clothes downstairs to the ironing room and use one of 2 total irons in the whole place (when there are 160 guests preparing to go to a formal dinner, this didn't work at all). The irons took about 2 times as long to work, not very good quality.

Internet:
There was one free internet kiosk. This was normally in use. I think there was Wi-fi if you had a laptop, not 100% certain though.

Breakfast:
Fairly plain, not a lot of choice. Lack of cereals, etc. The breakfast was on the top floor.

Overall:
I would try to stay somewhere else next time, for the money paid here, I was greatly shocked at the poor quality. If I had paid less than $100 per night, I would have been happy, but the extra $$ did not result in better quality.

“Desperate need of renovation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2008

First the good thing, that everything is very clean and tidy and the beds are fairly comfortable. But thats the plus points! The hotel seems stuck in a time warp decorated in a 1960's and 70's manner that does little to make it attractive. The bedrooms are painted grey and everything inside such as doors and light switches appears to be original as it was in the year it was built 1969 (according to the hotel literature.) Food for breakfast was adequate if nothing special. Minibar was overpriced even it were in a city such as London or New York. There is a cafe area oustide at the rear of the hotel, with pools originally for fish but now the only thing floating is a slimy green algea. Reception is lightly manned, one person at most times and if they are taking a phone call expect little reply or service from them. If you get a room at the front of the hotel you will have to endure constant road noise and as the windows appear as old as the hotel they do not cancel it out. One last thing is the rooms have no aircon, so if it is hot you have to have the balcony open but as that also leads to the balcony (fire escape) of every other room poses a serious security problem if you leave the door open.

  • Liked — clean and tidy
  • Disliked — everything else
