I stayed there twice, during business trips. I liked this hotel during my first stay in the winter, so I chose it over my usual hotel when I went to Xanthi again, in July. A mistake.
First things first. The hotel is small but tidy - It makes you feel good. It was redecorated two years ago and it shows, with the possible exception of soundproofing. The small rooms are clean with little furniture, which I don't mind, a balcony and a modern bathroom with all the necessary cosmetics plus an unexpectedly soft bathrobe. The bed is big and comfortable (with strangely too big and hard pillows), there is an LCD TV (with limited choice of stations) and of course free Wi Fi. An absolute necessity for me these days. The breakfast unfortunately is seriously below par. I expect much more at any price, let alone at Elisso's prices.
The hotel is located very close to "the vibrant heart of the city". Too close. It's fine if your business is at the centre of the city or the old town. Everything is a short walk away. Unfortunately my business associates are out of the city, so I have to use my car. At least I can go out on foot, after my meetings. The city is full of life with a blend of Greek local colour and oriental influences, most evident in the cuisine. Most of the restaurants have something interesting to offer, the food is generally adequate, tasty and affordable. There are also lots of bars, cafes etc. There are many choices for going out, not only on weekends. All this in walking distance from the hotel.
Now, why did I say staying there was a mistake? Because I'm a light sleeper, that's why! It's OK in the winter, but during summer, when everyone is outside it can be bothersome. Greek people are not silent types, even more so after a few drinks. The music, the crowds, the noise can go on until late in the night. And I don't go to bed too early. That's my main concern. You either like being close to all the people, the bars, the noise etc or you don't. However, a few drinks can take care of the noise issue...
