Arriving here as a solo taveller on October 1st, the omens were good. Great weather....a friendly welcome from the daughter of the owner....and a great view from the room. That's something you can't critisise....the view IS stupendous. but then....things didn't go so well. I was promised a double bed...but instead found three 'Goldilocks' type beds...I chose one, but they were all the same....small, and very uncomfortable. Fine for a child or teenager... not for a 6' 1" tall adult. You soon realise that the apartments aren't near ANYWHERE to buy provisions of any kind....and so you have to walk down an INCREDIBLY steep hill....one in 4, maybe....and then another 20 minutes - or so - before you reach the main town where all the supermarkets, tavernas, etc are situated. The road is NOT a good walk, either...narrow, with two lines of traffic, and numerous potholes. NOT recommended for the elderly, or anyone with walking difficulties. After a meal at night, I always caught a taxi back from the old port.....5-6 euros, average, but worth every cent. Towards the end the weather turned terribly cold and wet...do NOT go to Skiathos in October....and I was told I was the ONLY ONE left in the apartment block but strangely, he family's attitude to me didn't change. you'd have though I'd have had more of a 'personal' service, especially as I was on my own....but no, I still came down in the cold and wet to an empty breakfast room where - sometimes - I was served a toastie, juice, and juice (5 euros)... I often came back from a day walking, to find the place deserted, the bar shut, and the apartments like a 'ghost town' - even though the car park showed SOMEONE was in....two motorbikes parked near the pool weren't waiting to 'check in'! I found it very difficult to find anyone when I wanted something...(except when checking out and paying the bill, surprise surprise...).There was no 'reception', and the family lived in their own flats, so short of knocking on doors, it was nigh on impossible to find anyone. I ended up going to an apartment block down the road for a beer, where I was welcomed with open arms!!! Left on a sour note when I was charged for one breakfast I KNEW I had been around for, shivering in the cold, where nobody was around.....but the owner swore she HAD been. Had this been a 'nicer' time to go, maybe i would have felt differently, but nonetheless, I would never stay here again due to: a) the location, in relation to ANY nearby activity/shops/tavernas....b)THAT dangerous hill.....c) the hard-as-nail beds.....and although the room WAS spotlessly clean on arrival, fresh towels were only provided ONCE....and maybe more importantly, the bathroom 'bin' (Greekophiles will understand this!) was only 'cleaned' out once!!! As I was the only person staying there, this was a bit rich!
