Our holiday in Skiathos followed a week on Skopelos and it was a nice contrast from the quiet lazy time we’d spent at the Adrina Beach. I’m not saying that Cape Kanapitsa is a noisy or especially lively place; quite the opposite in fact, but Skiathos has somewhat more going on most of the time than Skopelos. That, and the fact that Cape Kanapitsa provided us with car hire at a special rate of only €15 per day meant we had lots of places to go if we wanted.
I was surprised to read a previous, rather damning review; alarmed, even – as I read it a week before we set off from the UK and it weighed on my mind a little while we were having such a nice time in Skopelos. However, I needn’t have worried as our room was wonderful and the Cape Kanapitsa staff incredibly helpful and welcoming. Maya was charming and businesslike: recommending restaurants and organising things for us. Eric the German receptionist/barman was a phenomenon of advice and direction: sorting out minor problems speedily and seeming to know our needs before we asked. Poor guy was doing 15-hour shifts and still managing to look fresh and keen.
I think the mixed reviews may be down to choice of room as there are regular hotel rooms and a small number of suites. I can’t speak for the former but we got a great end-of-season deal on the “presidential” suite and it was quite wonderful (see the website for pictures). We woke each morning and opened the curtains to gaze down at the bay 10 meters below lapping gently against the rocks with boats gently bobbing about; the Skiathos hillsides providing a picturesque backdrop. The suite had a lounge, balcony, bedroom (king sized), two bathrooms each with a shower and one with a double spa bath and view over the bay, so we were quite delighted with the accommodation. There was a small built-in kitchen (not yet plumbed in), a fully working fridge and two widescreen TVs. The balcony had shade all day long and was ideal for sitting, reading watching the boats pass by. We could swim and snorkel at the bottom of a short set of stairs down from near our door; some good fish to see but unfortunately spoiled by lots of builder’s rubble from the hotel’s construction.
Breakfasts were good with some great fruits and Greek yoghourt with honey. The fried eggs were a little crisp at first and the bacon a little anaemic; but things improved as the week went on.
There are two small saltwater pools which were refreshing and a sun patio/bar/lunch area that has views to die for, especially in the early morning. The panorama extends from the local bay across Skiathos town in the mid distance to the west coast of Skopelos in the far distance.
There are a handful of reasonably good tavernas in the vicinity and some excellent ones not too far down the road. Kanapitsa is also a good base for exploring the island, being roughly half way along the main island road.
The room cleaning wasn’t quite up to the standard of the accommodation, but it would only bother the most fastidious, I think. There was a little confusion over our pre-booked car hire but it was quickly sorted out; all the same, I’d advise re-confirming everything a week or two before you arrive.
Great value if you choose your room and time-of-year carefully and a wonderful place to relax. A smart little gecko was waiting for us in our room one night when we got back from eating; we named him Eric.
